IDP Week 5 NFL Fantasy Football 2010 Waiver Wire Pick Ups

Immediate Pickups

SS D. Whitner BUF has done it again . His 9 solos and 4 assists this week are enough for me following his incredible IDP score from last week. If you've been waiting for Brian Dawkins or Weddle to take off and been sorely disappointed, grab this guy and replace them. Buffalo strong safety has always been a goldmine and they are on the field an incredible amount of time.

DE/DT H. Ngata BAL - How many of us are kicking ourselves for not picking up this guy for week 4. I'm sure we all looked at him. I know I did when I found out Robaire Smith was questionable, but I went with Chris Clemons instead, who did have 2 Sacks so I can't complain. Ngata got 8 solos 3 assists and 1 sack. WOW! Awesome game and by far the DE pick up of the week.

CB G Toler ARI is the real deal. He has been an IDP giant at his position since he got the call this year and week 4 was no different with 7 total tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

CB Alterraun Verner TEN - I started recommending this guy later in the week to some individual questions because we found out that starting corner Jason McCourty needed arm surgery and Jason's doctor said he will be out until he is healthy. That's an interesting timeframe. So we have no idea how quickly McCourty will be back. In the meantime, Verner will be picked on regularly and his 11 solos this week dictate that. No one wants to throw to Finnegan so Verner will get the tackles by default. Enjoy him while you got him.

!!!NEVERMIND JUST GOT SUSPENDED - OUT 4 WEEKS!!! SS S. Gregory SD is (no longer) safe to pick up now. This week was 6 solos and an INT making that 3 out of 4 games this year with 6 tackles or more.

SS Charles Godfrey CAR is very consistent. He's an above average SS. I'd want him over bigger names like Dawkins or Weddle on my team.

DE/LB chris Kelsay BUF continues to put up decent numbers for a guy listed as a DL in most leagues. He's not a top DL, but consistent & solid week in and week out and the best part is he is a hybrid guy because he truly is an outside linebacker

DT HELP I'm getting a lot of DT questions. I'm going to be completely honest. Anyone who's played knows it's a complete crap shoot most of the time. No doubt that Suh is good & Ngata (who might not be a DT in your league) looked great week 4.

But here's a flyer name for you, Car DT Derek Landri. He's got 11 tackles so far this year and he faces the Bears line who allowed 10 sacks on Sunday night. TEN SACKS in one night!!! So why not give him a whirl if your guy has been getting you nothin? I hate DTs too. I wish they were'nt part of IDP. They might as well be kickers who you close your eyes and pick out of a hat each week.  While we're on the topic, why not give CAR DE Charles Johnson a try this week too. He's get a sack in each of the 2 previous games and could be facing Todd Collins, instead of Cutler and that very weak offensive line.

Bye Week Pick Up Help

LB Dhani Jones CIN 7 solos is the Bengal LB you'd want over Rivers if one of your guys is on bye. He's not sexy, but he's very consistent. You can mark him down for 5-7 solos anytime you plug him in.

SS Q. Mikell PHI has been solid and consistent. He's a fine fill in.

LB Shaun Phillips SD had a Touchdown, 4 sacks, 1 INT, 5 solos & 2 pass deflections. HOLY $%&#! Unfortunately the previous weeks don't back these numbers up, but what a great boom or bust guy to plug in and roll the dice on.

FS M. Huff OAK did exactly what was predicted and led his team in tackles from free safety vs. Houston with 7 tackles 1 assist. He faces SD next week and should still post 5-6 tackles if you need him, but this week may be his ceiling for the season.

Mirages (Are they for real? Don't pick them up yet)

LB S. Nicholas ATL was fantastic with 12 solos and an assist, but all he was doing was filling in for injured rookie Sean Weatherspoon, who has done nothing to lose his job. So all this performance from Nicholas shows us is who to pick up if Sean Weatherspoon is injured again.

DB Taylor Mays SF 9 solos and 2 assists. This is very exciting to see, but we need to see if he can do this again.

CB David Jones JAQs 9 tackles and 2 assists and 1 forced fumble. A mirage for now since it was vs. the Colts passing game, but worth keeping an eye on.

LB AJ Hawk GB had 9 solos and 3 assists and an INT. Great game, but let's see him do it again. This guy has really let down many of us IDP guys in the past and the trend is you cannot trust him.

LB Keith Rivers CIN put up 8 solos and a sack, but he's so inconsistent that I don't trust him. I wouldn't pick him up unless you are really needing a boom/bust guy and your in a pinch during a bye week or your guy is injured.

LB E. Barton CLE for the Browns is a guy I've NOT been recommending to people all week. I just don't trust any Brown's LBs. If you must start a Browns guy in a pinch, the guy you want is LB S. Fujita, who's a sack specialist and got one this week vs. the Bengals. He also got a forced fumble and 5 solos.

Observations

LB James Anderson CAR got me 35 points in my league. That's a lot more than my QB. How many did he get you in your league in week 4? Loving him this week! I can't believe he's doing this from SLB. Remember that Beason is the WLB (usually the tackle heavy position) and Conner is in at MLB on run packages, but Connor comes on out passing packages.

LB Paris Lenon ARI did it again and has yet to let us down (knock on wood)

LB Zac Diles HOU did again, but Brian Cushing is back so it's time to release Diles. It was a fun ride and we know who to grab if Cushing gets hurt, but make room for Cush to EXPLODE into the box scores.  If I were to guess what the leaders would look like next week, I'd go Willis, Poz, Cushing, Briggs, J. Anderson, P. Lenon, D. Johnson, C. Lofton, Ruud etc.  I'm really jealous of you Cush owners. I went the other route and stashed Dqwell instead of Cush. You see how that worked out for me.

LB K. Morrison JAQs - He had his first big game of the year with 8 solos and 2 assists and it's the first time he out scored Daryl Smith this year. I think you need to give this another week to tell if it's a mirage or real

SS T.J. Ward CLE was solid again with 8 total tackles, but I might try Buffalo's Whitner over him if you're not happy enough with Ward's numbers for your team.

LB Ray Lewis BAL comes through on big games that he get's fired up for. He's an emotional player and when he plays Pit or the Bengals, he pulls out bigger games. Personally, I'm still very happpy that I started CAR James Anderson over him.

Hey monk Eli again

So question for this week. I hope u remember my roster. Anyways i still feel there can be upgrades made one for example do u think Whitner is better than ward?
I need a dt monk I have sione puha and he has done nothing for two weeks huge blow. I am trying to get ngata but till then who do I pick up!
Last thing winefield is on my team anyone better than him u suggest?

Unknown said...

@ Eli

Yes, I remember that you have DE-Trent Cole
DL-Jared Allen
LB-Dansby
CB-Winfield
S-TJ Ward
DB-Chung
DT-Pohua

Bench:
DE-Vanden Bosch

Your question is if I'd take Whitner over Ward. Looking at your roster, No. And hear's why. Whitner is slightly more of a "swing for the fenses" guy. You already have that type of guy on your team with Winfield. And boy is he ever a Grand Slam when he does hit. You'll get at least one game out of Winfield this year where he gets an INT, TD, has a sack (most probably on a Sunday or Monday night game). So I'd stay Ward because he is very solid and consistent. He still scored more than Whitner up to this point in the year. Whitner has just scored more in the last 2 weeks. But not by a whole lot.

This is strictly DT so maybe you could get Ngata's partner Kelly Gregg or Suh. I just don't know who's available in your league.

Winfield has always been known as the best CB, but I couldn't blame anyone for picking up Toler as their #1 DB right now. I could not bring myself to drop Winfield for him though. Winfield would stay on the bench & Vanden Bosch would go

I'm getting a lot of DT questions. I'm going to be completely honest. Anyone who's played knows it's a complete crap shoot most of the time. No doubt the Suh is very good & Ngata looked great week 4.

I started James Anderson :) Great call and recommendation! Who would you go with for the rest of the season if you had to choose between Jared Allen or Mario Williams?

Anonymous said...

WOW WHAT A GAME FROM CHUNG!!! and at half time I was seriously considering dumping him .. He got me an upset victory win by 3 points!

Anyhow ... Monk ( The King of IDP )

who do I play this week?

Beason who has been boring or the returning Cushing!

Thanks,

Sean

Hi Monk
thanks for answering my question last week. This week I need to pick up a safety and an LB as well as 1 more defensive player of any position

(DT required, big play league)

My lineup is:
DL: Allen,Dockett,Cole
LB: Beason, Diles, Wake
CB: Cason, Bowman
S: Godfrey, Chung
D: Wimbley
(Bench: Q Groves)

Groves appears to have a hamstring injury, Cushing is returning so Im looking to replace Diles and Chung and Godfrey have byes back to back so Im looking for a fillin safety for 2 weeks
My options on the waiver wire are:
S:D Whitner, CC Brown, K Phillips, D Manning
LB:Hali, Brooking, Q Black, Orakpo, G Brackett, K Rivers and possibly J Belcher

Also do you think I should replace one of my CBs with Verner?

Thanks

Monk,
Love the blog, always great advice!
Question for you on a few guys who came out of the gates quick....

LaRon Landry has had his points go down each week after his great week 1, and Whitner is available for pickup...who of those two is better for consistent stats?

Clay Mathews obviously was the man weeks 1 and 2, but has been relatively quiet since (he did have a sack this week though). Guys like Mayo, DJ Williams, Poz, Rivers and Morrison are available, would you drop him and pick up one of those guys? My other LB is Lenon, so if you think any of those are better than him going forward, the advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

@ Todd

Your Question:
Would you start Chris Kelsay (or Quentin Groves or Rob Ninkovich) over Jared Allen?

Answer: Nope Can't quit on Allen. He'll burn you for it with a 5 sack game when you do.

_____________________

Your Question:
I D.hall available and Oshiomogho Atogwe on my roster. can I drop him and pick D.Hall,
Thanks

Yup, Hall over Atogwe

_____________________

@Sean

Cushing over Beason

_____________________

@ Derick

I can see why your having trouble between Osi & Suh.

My gut says Osi vs. Houston next week. Teams will focus on Tuck and that will open up Osi in this one.

_____________________

@ Eli

Wow, I want all 3! You're asking if you should get Lenon, Poz or Cushing off your wire? What kind of league are you in? Those are the top 3 out of 5 LBs in my mind. I want all of them on my roster. If I were to put them in order at this point, I go Poz, Cushing Lenon if that helps. All over Dansby right now.

_____________________

@ Garrett

I'd go Poz over Laurinitus or Mayo or Urlacher. So Poz is the definite so I guess if I had to, I'd drop Mayo because of his inconsistencies last year from week to week. I was very frustrated owning him last year and I owned Laurinitus who was much more consistent. Plus Laurinitus is on a crappier team so team will run against the rams more.

Unknown said...

@ simonsays

Anderson is nice to have isn't he. You always have to go Jared Allen over Mario. They are both inconsistent, but Allen is the king of DEs so you have to stick with him through the good and bad

_____________________

@ DonnieCA

Thanks for the compliments.

I've got no problem with you dropping both Freeney & Bosch for any of those guys. Babin has been doing some good stuff as well as Clemens. But I'd definitely make at least one of your guys Chris Kelsay because your guaranteed tackles from him since he really is an LB and he finished very high among DEs in 2009 so you know he's the real deal. This is just how DLs are and I don't lose any sleep over them. I choose them like choosing kickers. If it looks like a team is going to score a lot of points, I try to grab that kicker. The same with DEs. Only I look at the guys who play on teams with good offenses. That way you hope the other team will be playing from behind and will have to throw. The more the other team throws, the better chance your DE has at getting sacks. I either play that strategy or just look at DEs facing an offensive line that is clearly crappy. The Bears are a good example of that and week 5 CAR DE Charles Johnson faces them next. Don't forget the golden rule of DE's though. As soon as you drop Bosch & Freeney, they'll both go off for great games. haha DLs truly are a roll of the dice from week to week, but sometimes it's best to stick with what you have too. They had to get good some how even though it doesn't always seem like that when they're on your team.

I'd go Kelsay and Babin and see how that works. Is Justin Smith SF available in your league? This is the time of year to start picking him up. This is when he starts heating up each year.

_____________________

@Eli
Sure Bj raji, but you could roll the dice on my Carolina DT recommendation on the blog this week as well.

You know your team better than I as far as needing another roster space. If you're talking dropping Dansby because you desperately need to replace an offensive bye week guy than absolutely, but if your just dropping Dansby to take a risk on some other random LB who might have had a better game this week, than I'd stick by Dansby.

_____________________

@ Alaskin Assassin

ABSOLUTELY. Grab Cushing NOW, NOW, NOW over James Harrison. He'll be as productive as Poz, if not more. Lofton will have a good week so I'd go Lofton Ruud, Cushing Poz Laurinaitus

Your Question:
LB question for the rest of the season: Keep David Harris or pick-up Chad Greenway

Answer:
That's really even. Literally flip a coin. You drafted Harris much higher so I guess I'd keep him, but that's whatever you want to do. No difference.

Unknown said...

@ Thoracic Outlet

At safety, I would go Whitner, I'd go Brooking vs. Ten week 5 and your overall guy should be G Bracket vs. KC.

Verner is at Dallas so yes I like that if McCourty is still injured (which he should be)

Unknown said...

@ Graham

Yup, you gotta roll with the punches to stay alive in this week to week.

Don't make that move yet. I Love Landry vs. GB so not yet.

I would take Poz over Matthews in a heartbeat

Anonymous said...

Poz or Ruud the rest of the way fellas? Both are available in my league.

Unknown said...

My vote is Poz over Ruud the rest of the way, but both are injury prone so no guarantees. Plus, you never know if Tatupu goes back down and Hawthorne takes back over

Your Question:

Is there any of these players target at the waiver-wire.

LB:
Shaun Phillips, Landri & AJ Hawk is avaiable.

Team: Posluszny, Lenon, Anderson, D.Johnson, D.Washington.

Answer:
No, you're set.

_________________

Your question

DB:
Avaiable Chung, Rhodes, Whitner, Verner,
Bell, Goldson & Kenny Phillips.

Team:Y.Bell, Goldson & Kenny Phillips.

Answer: Obviously Chung over both Goldson & Phillips. Drop Phillips first. If not Chung, I would go Whitner over Phillips.

Your Question
BTW is Anderson the real deal? I have been offered Cushing for him. Who would be potential upgrades, if any, for Anderson in a dynasty league?

Answer:
Cushing over Anderson for the year. He's a beast. I have a hard time believing Anderson will continue to out produce Jon Beason from the SLB slot all year.

_________________

@ Eli

Yup, Poz over Lenon for the year. Lenon is just getting opportunity because Arizona is so bad. Keep in mind that Lenon is man that would not be a starter on about 25 other NFL teams in the league. The Lions cut him for a good reason. Poz is a much better athlete and linebacker and will also get just as much opportunity for a poor Buffalo team. Poz is your safer bet and will match or surpass anything that Lenon does this year.

You have Anderson, Timmons & Lenon and could get Poz or Cushing too. The good news is it really doesn't matter in that group because your set no matter what. If I had to rank them based on matchups this week, I would say that don't like Lenon a ton because NO will not have Pierre T. or R. Bush so they will pass more often. I love Buf vs. the Jaqs because the jaqs will run all day so Poz is my favorite this week. I don't like Anderson vs. Chi as no LBs do well vs. Chi. And I'm just OK with Cushing matchup vs. the Giants.

No matter what, get Poz. And I'd keep Timmons on my team. If you have that much freakin talent on your waiver, I wouldn't stress much about who you drop because you can pick up talent anytime you want. Just play the weekly matchups. On second thought, as a strategy, I might look at my opponents team and see their LB and then pick up the second best matchup LB this week so they can't use Lenon against your for instance. You see what I mean, drop Timmons because he can't be used this week, but gather up any guys on your bench that could be used against you by your opponent.

Unknown said...

Your Question,
Which three would you keep for the year out of the following five?

Poz
Cushing
Vilma
Lenon
Anderson

Answer:
I'd keep Poz, Cushing & Anderson for the whole year.

Your Question:
Mine is tackle heavy league, I am scoring pretty good at DE with cole and peppers. I have POZ, Ziles lenon at LB. I need to replace ziles, narrowly missed on cushing, i am rolling sean cosidine and hall.

Answer:
Considine might be injured this week with a bad hamstring. I think I would plug in Morrison with that lineup because Poz & Lenon are your homerun guys & Morrison can be your guaranteed to get you at least 4 or 5 tackles

@ Long Live the Fade

It's Mays because he is now the permanent starter and Verner is just a temporary fill in while McCourty is injured.

Your Question:

I have Tyvon Branch as my starting DB. Should I consider starting someone like T.Ward, D. Whitner or G. Toler.

Answer:
It's a new year isn't it and you have to roll with the times. I love Branch and he's the man. I'd give him one last chance vs. SD this week and ask the question again next week.

@ Lanquan
Diles is definitely done with Cushing back. Brackett is your guy. Always choose full time guy over a part time guy

Hi Monk!
Great info again this season. My team:

Vilma, Henderson, McIntosh, Shaun Phillips, McClain, Delmas, and Landry.

McClain has disappointed so far this season. Was considering dropping him for Geno Hayes or AJ Hawk - what do you think? Too early, or no? I think Hayes has a lot of upside. Thanks!!

Unknown said...

@ Renny

That move isn't too early for me. I also like Hayes. Haven't seen anything from Rolando to back up the hype on him, but Geno has proved himself for a couple seasons now.

Monk,

Do you think I should start Keith Brookings over James L. (Rams) or Ray Lewis? I know that sounds crazy but Keith Brookings has a great matchup and is being kept on the field this year during nickel packages.

Thanks Monk

I have traded Cushing for Anderson now. I also made a major rookie mistake accepting a Favre bid (without knowing the Moss-trade) for Laurinaitis. Well, it is not terrible in a dynasty league, but I hate making trades on less information than my opponent.

The lb's are now:
Posluszny, Laurinaitis, Cushing, Lenon, Washington & D.Johnson. (Which three should I start and which one release?)

Answer:
Wow, that's interesting. This may be a case where we've gone too far on the other side of the spectrum on Levy. By default, he is the lead ILB on a defense that will be on the field a lot so the opportunities are there. That being said, I don't like the Black & Hayes strategy because Ruud is also there. That's a 3 way LB committee and Black always seems to be the man left out of that. He had 1 tackle week 1 and only 1 big game so far this year.

So I'd go Levy over Black. I understand you wanting to see what your shiny new toy McRath can do. I hope it pays off for you, but the great news is you have defensive players from teams that all have fairly crappy offensives. (Wimbley is with Oak - just a reminder)

Your Question:

You cannot bench Lenon or Poz right now. Both have good matchups and are just UBER studs so far. Then I think I'd go D. Johnson in that matchup, but it's very close between him or J.Laur this week. Who every you like more between those 2. Johnson is more of the big play guy with 2 INTs for 2 TDs in only 2 games he started in last year. He's always been that kind of guy with FF, INTs and a sack here or there.

If you've got an instinct about Landri, go with it. Nothing is more rewarding that when a guy you called goes off when none of the "so called" experts have him on their radar. I like it... Why not. See what happens. QBs always pick on the "fresh meat" so you have that on your side. That's the only reason Toler is doing so well.

I have been offered a db of own choice for Paris Lenon.
The option is either Landry, Rhodes, T.J. Ward or Q.Mikell.

As you probably remember I am in a dynasty league, so the value of Lenon is a bit less as he is 32.

That is very tempting to get Ward over Whitner, but I don't know who your replacement for Lenon is then or do you only start 2 LBs? I think Ward is an upgrade over Whitner because I don't trust how the Bills use their safeties at all. But can you get a hold of Kevin Burnett or someone like that or better to equal out the loss of Lenon if you do start 3?
____________

@ Long Live The Fade

See the latest blog entry for a list of the great LBs and where they are. The reason I'm a waiver wire guy is because I don't trust any LB, ever. Not even Willis. I watch trends and matchups so giving you a list of my top guys is a waste because I adjust on the fly. I concentrate this blog on finding gems and foreseeing gems on the wire. Guys don't need me to tell them the top 10 regulars in the league for the entire season. There's other site and professional who do those rankings out there. I just concentrate on what I see on the horizon because it fits my schedule, #1 (being a dad with 3 kids under 7 years old and 2 jobs, I can only do a small segment of defense) and #2, it's what I enjoy the most. If someone asks me Patrick Willis or Poz this week, I answer, but I'm basically flipping a coin because your set either way. But scouting out a Patrick Chung before the season starts or a David Hawthorne in the beginning of last season before he went off is where the fun is at. Basically, my niche concentrates on all guys that do not normally get drafted in any IDP league.

Tamba Hali & Keith Rivers

DB(3 starters):
