IDP Week 3 NFL Fantasy Football 2010 Waiver Wire Pick Ups

Sometimes there's just not enough room on our rosters. Many of you are probably like me. You can only start 2 safeties in some leagues or you can start any 5 defensive players you want, but your bench slots are very limited. Either way, the dilemma is still the same in both situations. You've got guys on your team who you drafted like Bernard Pollard and Adrian Wilson or overall defensive players like Michael Boley and Clint Session. With each of the guys I just mentioned, your in good shape, right?  Unfortunately, not so much when you see a guy like Chung go off week 1 and your guy Boley gives you only fantasy crumbs. And then this week, Chung has an average week, Boley has a good week and Pollard does OK, but then you see TJ Ward go nuts in week 2. So what do we do? We just don't have enough roster space. Do we drop a stud? We can't... right?

I wish I had easy answers to these questions. The mainstream answer is to never bench or drop your studs. Guys like Ray Lewis, Lance Briggs, Curtis Lofton and Bernard Pollard are going to have "up" weeks and "down" weeks, but they became studs for a reason and we need to stick with them.

But newer guys like I've been mentioning like Patrick Chung and TJ Ward truly are a wait and see between the 2. One may emerge over the other. Or perhaps we find that owning both Chung & Ward will ultimately out perform a duo like Bernard Pollard and Adrian Wilson. We found out last year that owning David Hawthorne was more valuable than owning the very high draft pick David Harris. And Bryan Scott far outperformed a stud like Oshiomogho Atogwe through the second half of the year. So although we shouldn't panic on our studs because they have one bad week like this weeks Curtis Lofton with only 3 solos, we also need to recognize when a better opportunity is arising before our eyes and it's time to pull the plug on a middle-tier "stud". We're coming into week 3 & 4, which are crucial times to recognize these trends.

One example of these trends is the Redskins SS L. Landry is the real deal and he'll continue to be the real deal. If he stays healthy, he could easily end the year as a top 5 IDP guy and the top IDP strong safety. A mirage to ignore from week 2 is Landry's co-partner Reed Doughty with his 10 solos and 4 assists. And although Reed Doughty may be a mirage, free safeties facing Houston are not a mirage. At this point in the season, this is the most solid trend I've seen. Though I cannot recommended picking up the Cowboys FS Alan Ball, who faces Houston week 3, I do recommend looking at the box scores next week to see if even the most pathetic IDP safety in the league sees a bump in tackles. He's averaging about 2 solos a week so even if you see it bump up to 5 or 6, that will be plenty of proof. But keep this trend of FS vs. Houston trend in mind for future pickups/starts.

Week 3 IDP Pick ups

LB D. Johnson KC  If you didn't get him yet and needed one more week, you've seen he's the real deal now so don't hesitate any longer to plug him in as a really high #2 LB. He's not in the Patrick Willis, Jon Beason realm, but he's putting up similar points. So ride that hand while it lasts. To give you an idea of the guys I would start above and below Johnson. I would choose Clay Matthews over D. Johnson, but I would choose Johnson over Oakland's Rolondo McClain.

SS TJ Ward CLE has officially made the pick up list. He was really good last week and even better in week 2 leading his team with 8 solos and an assist vs. the Chiefs.

LB Paris Lenon ARI  was outstanding with 9 solos and 2 assists in week 2. He was very good in week 1 as well. So who do you choose between fellow LB D. Washington, who got 10 solos this week? Based on the evidence, you have to go Lenon at this point.

LB D. Washington ARI  finished with 10 solos this week and looks like a rising star. He may end up being the more valuable LB in Arizona, but the winner so far is Lenon.

CB Greg Toler ARI, who finished with 13 solos and a forced fumble in week 1 was very solid again in week 2. Teams are going to continue avoiding Cromartie and picking on Toler. He faces Oakland in week 3 so I'd tone down expectations slightly as the Raiders will try to win with a "run first" philosophy. But there's a good chance Oakland will need to throw to catch up so Toler has proved enough to be plugged in as a CB on your squad.

SS Patrick Chung NE, who opened up week 1 with 12 solos and 4 assists, was solid in week 2 with 5 solos. He was inches away from an interception as well. He didn't get a ton of opportunities vs. the Jets so I wouldn't worry about the slight "fall to Earth" in week 2.

LB Dqwell Jackson CLE could be back week 3, but my recommendation is to hold off on him his first game back. We've made due without him this long, we can wait and see how much they us him in the next game. My guess is they work him in slowly a few series here or there to see how he feels.

LB Zac Diles HOU finished with 5 solos and 3 assists this week and he's still a nice pick up until Cushing comes back

DE K. Vanden Bosch DET followed up his 10 solos from last week with 6 total tackles and 1 and a half sacks this week. That is solid stuff!

Watch VERY Closely

LB Sean Weatherspoon ATL  the rookie had 8 solos, and assist and a sack in his coming out a party vs. Arizona

LB Dan Connor CAR  fell back down to Earth a bith this week with 4 solos and 2 assists. He is still not playing in passing defense so if he's not on the field a percentage of time, he can't get you points.

Watch Closely

SS Craig Dahl STL 7 solos and 1 assist week 2

DE Jason Babin TEN had 7 solos, 1 assist and a sack. Keep an eye on him

DE Sione Pouha NYJ got 6 solos as a DE. See if this trend is real

LB K. Wimbley OAK gets decent tackle numbers, but it's his sacking ability that really differentiates him

CB D. Butler NE looks like a pretty exciting cornerback. Keep an eye on him.

LB Cameron Wake MIA  Like Wimbley above, he doesn't do it so much in tackles, but sacks and big plays.

LB A. Davis BUF increased his solos in week 2 and is a solid bye week fill in.

LB Ellison BUF filled in for Poz again and was solid enough to be another option for you if you have an injury to one of your guys or are in a deep league

Monk I need ur help please

So Ratliff has sucked so far so I dropped him for sione pohua since he is starting now in place of Jenkins and has had two solid weeks especially for a dt (my league he is dt)
Is that good?? Anyone u prefer more?
Also I dropped delmas for tj ward I know delmas is good but two weeks he's blown coverage and allowed a td so I'm scared they'll bench him or use him less plus ward has had two monster weeks! I play db cb and s so I have ward chung and Antoine Winfield... Recommend anyone else instead??
Thanks looking forward to kicking ass thanks to u!!!

Hi Michael,

Thanks again for the time you spend on your site, its much appreciated by all here. I want to concentrate on DL/DE. I have 5 in my line-up, they being Suh, Jason Pierre-Paul, Antwan Odom, M. Shaughnessy and Greg Hardy. I know like to know your thoughts more specifically in regards to Odom and Shaughnessy in geneal. I also have K. Wimbley as a LB, I know he's moved to DE but my league still has him marked as LB from his days in Cleveland. Also, too bad you don't branch off too much in talking about offensive players but truly appreciate your advice and knowledge in regards to defensive players. Keep up the GREAT work, Michael.

@ Eli

Pohua is a fine pickup. You gotta do what you gotta do to win.

Dropping Delmas for Ward is ironic since I feel Ward is this years Delmas. I like the bold move and, although Delmas is very good, so is Ward. I think you'll be fine.

Your other question: I play db cb and s so I have ward chung and Antoine Winfield... Recommend anyone else instead??

I like all those guys. Nice work.

Your question:

Lawerence Timmons OR Derrick Johnson??

It really depends on the weekly matchups. They're pretty even, but the edge has to go to Timmons because he's got more stability on his team.

@ CJ (Long.Live.The.Fade)

Thank you for the really nice compliments! The truth is I'm quite bad on the offensive side of the ball so I don't dare give advice there. For example, week 1 I benched Wes Welker (welker gets 2 scores & 80 yards) and I started Mike Sims Walker (who did nothing) & Floyd (who did nothing). Week 2 I drop Floyd & pick up Naanee and play him over Mike Sims Walker (walker goes for 10 catches, over 100 yards and a score and Floyd does the same thing, but he's on someone elses team now). Meanwhile, Naanee gets one catch. My running backs are K. Moreno & DeAngelo Williams. Both are terrible. My backups are F. Jones & Bradshaw, but I keep wussing out on starting Bradshaw over D. Williams. My QB is Farve & my TE is Z. Miller. So you can see how HORRIBLE I am at offense.
My M.O. in my league is my IDP guys beat other teams RBs QBs & WRs single handedly some weeks. I should be asking for your help advice on offense. ;^D

Answer:
I've had this feeling about Shaughnessy, but it's not panning out so far and I love the potential of Odom, but he hasn't showed up either. Not really. I say stick with him a tad longer and let's see.

I'm starting to like Wimbley more & more as an LB. He's a sack machine!

Hey Monk.

You are indeed a fantasy guru.

I have been offered Mathis for Vanden Bosch. Normally i would take the offer in a heart beat?

What do you recommend?

Monk,

I didn't see the Bills game, however Mr. George Wilson didn't score me a point, do ya know what gives, are there changes happening in the secondary? Anyone I should be looking for here?

Would you drop Erik Coleman for TJ Ward of Cleveland? Not sure about this knee injury. Also, just picked up Timmons and dropped McClain - would you play him over Lofton? Thanks.

D- Derrick Johnson (planning to get timmons)

DE-Trent Cole
DL-Jared Allen
LB-Dansby
CB-Winefield
S-TJ Ward
DB-Chung
DT-Pohua

Bench:
DE-Vanden Bosch

Wat u think? I think its pretty elite shud i make any changes??

Btw just wanted to say thanks again bc of you during my draft while all the other suckers were reaching for Defensive players i was drafting quilty offensive players that now i can trade or use and still managed to get sick D players bc of u!! so thanks if not for u I wud not dominate IDP (last year won 3/3 thanks to u)

Your Question:

Mathis for Vanden Bosch in a trade

Answer:

I wouldn't do that. Vanden Bosch will get more tackles to go along with sacks. Mathis might end up with more sacks, but he won't get you the tackles that Bosch will this year. Remember, Bosch plays for the Lions. Which D do you think will be on the field more often this year. Lions or Colts?

Your Question:

Answer:
Your guess is as good as mine there. I did see Bryan Scott in the box scores. And Whitner isn't the man either. It just goes to show that last year is offer. It was a different scheme and this team may not be the safety goldmine that it was last year. It happens. I'll keep my eyes peeled and keep you updated.

Answer:
I would do that. The scheme is better for Ward. And I would play Timmons over Lofton until Timmons gives you a reason not to or Lofton has a great matchup. Do not drop Lofton though. He'll probably have more value than Timmons when all is said and done.

Hello again Monk!

In my big play IDP league (0.75 Tackle, 2.5 Sack, 3.5 INT, 3.5 FR, 2.5 PD) I've decided to give up on Weddle. How would you rank the following?

TJ Ward, Yeremiah Bell, Sean Considine, Louis Delmas, James Butler

In my other league (1.5 Tackle, 1 Assist, 2 Sack, 3 INT, 1.5 PD) which LB to add?

Sean Weatherspoon, Michael Boley, Jerod Mayo, David Harris, James Anderson, Rocky McIntosh

Keep up the good work!!

@ marmstrong

I like D. Washington's matchup too. Plug him in and let's see what we get. Not much downside to him.

Your Question:

In my big play IDP league (0.75 Tackle, 2.5 Sack, 3.5 INT, 3.5 FR, 2.5 PD) I've decided to give up on Weddle. How would you rank the following?

TJ Ward, Yeremiah Bell, Sean Considine, Louis Delmas, James Butler

Answer: For big play, I have to say that none of these guys are real well know for sacks or INTs.
Delmas returned to for TDs and had quite a few PDs so I'd go him first, then Bell for his forced fumbles and PDs, then Butler for INTs, then Ward, then Considine. But I'd recommend Wimbley or C. Wake in this mix for the sack possibilities. Any chance DeAngelo Hall is available. He'd be my #1 on this list. The new kid Toler in Arizona will get a lot of PDs and INT chances as well.

Your other question:

In my other league (1.5 Tackle, 1 Assist, 2 Sack, 3 INT, 1.5 PD) which LB to add?

Sean Weatherspoon, Michael Boley, Jerod Mayo, David Harris, James Anderson, Rocky McIntosh

Answer:
Harris is the obvious top 5 IDP LB (by name) that jumps off that list. But (by actions) he hasn't lived up to that high draft pick status yet this year. All of those guys are GREAT so you're in really good shape no matter what.

But I think you have to have faith in David Harris and snatch him up. He'll come through and ultimately be more consistent than all the other guys on that list. Many are boom or busts that will give you incredible weeks and quiet weeks, but Harris will be more consistent for you game in and game out.

However, if your team is already full of "consistent" guys who are not exploding for you like a Ray Lewis, Jon Beason, Curtis Lofton and you need a boom or bust guy, Michael Boley is your risk/reward guy.

Hey Monk - great picks, as always.

I need to start three LBs in week 3 from the following:

* C. Greenway vs Det
* L. Fletcher vs St. Louis
* B. Rudd vs Pitt
* L. Timmons vs Tampa
* J. Mayo vs Buff

Which 3 would you start?

* L. Fletcher vs St. Louis
* B. Rudd vs Pitt
* L. Timmons vs Tampa
* J. Mayo vs Buff

Which 3 would you start?

The first guy has to be Timmons. He's been on fire these first two weeks and that game could be more evenly matched the people think with Josh Freeman playing well and Batch starting at QB. So TB may not be playing from behind.

I gotta go with Fletcher as your second guy because Steven Jackson is the St. Louis offense and that game could be fairly close as well.

Then I'd go Rudd against Pitt because that is the only high percentage game you've got where your can almost guarantee Pitt will be running the ball throughout the entirety of the game. Especially if they get a lead.

So sit Greenway & Mayo this week. I do need to add though that if you have a "feeling" about Greenway, feel free to start him over Rudd. Some of the other LBs in TB have been cutting into Rudd's production a bit and Detroit will be running Javid Best a good bit. You just have to watch EJ Henderson stealing tackles in Greenway's case. So that's the other reason I lean toward Ruud. Good Luck!

Your Question:

Hey Monk im in a bind here this week dont know which way to go!

scoring forced fumble 2
assist tackle 1
tackle 2
interception 5
sack 5
pass deflect 1

need to choose 2 at all positions
LB,DB,DL

LB David Harris,Barrett Ruud,Paris Lennon,Mike Boley

Answer: Harris & Ruud (when in doubt, start your studs)

DB Weddle,Chung,Bethea,TJ Ward

Answer: That one is tough, but I'm feeling Bethea & Ward this week.

DL Odum,Bierman,MarioW,SionePuha

Answer: Definitely Mario against that crappy Dallas line & I know Odum been slow, but he's facing a rookie QB in his first start. Gotta give it a whirl. Don't get that too often. If it's Matt Moore instead, even better.

Erick Coleman and Dqwell are on the wire people scared or forgot about them with there injuries do you see anybody to get rid of to get any of them?

Answer: Absolutely! I'd drop Lenon or Weddle or any of your lineman, but Mario to snag DQ. He's got that much upside. There is risk because he could repull that pec, but I think they've been careful and he's a TOP 3 LB when healthy!

Unknown said...

Question:
so far ive had a pretty disappointing turn out from morrison, chung, and mclain. available is timmons, toller, ward, and boley. would you make a move and target any of these guys

Answer: Chung was a little slow last week with 5 solos, but I don't think 13 solos week one marks him as disappointing going into week 3.

McClain is a rookie and he might not live upto the hype everyone gave him. I avoided him like the plague because I never pick up guys that I've never seen play in the NFL.

Timmons is definitely the guy you want right away.

The verdict is still up in the air for who's better between Chung and TJ Ward, but starting both is very nice value. They are both solid.

Boley is your other guy you'll want to target next.

So I would kick McClain & Morrison to the curb & pick up Timmons & Boley, but don't drop Chung yet. Chung will potentially have another slower week vs. BUF because he's more of a run stopper and I see BUF passing a lot to catch up in this one, but maybe he'll get some coverage tackles. He's a solid compliment to Timmons & Boley though.

Your question:

How would you rank these four guys for this week?

B Dawkins, L Timmons, D Johnson, and David Harris?

Thank you for the advice I need on a very tough matchup this week!

Answer:
BDawk has Indy so he get's an immediate boost as an SS. Then I like Timmons, then D. Johnson and then D. Harris this week. D. Harris is living on past reputation at this point from what I'm seeing.

Unknown said...

Your Question:
Is it worth releasing D.Washington for D.Levy (Waiver-wire)in a dynasty league?

Answer:
It's a tad bit early to make that call because we've only seen 1 really quality game out of D. Washington and have barely got a taste of what D. Levy can do since we only saw him on occasion last year and not at all this year yet.

It's an interesting question. My gut is D. Levy, but we need a bigger sample size to see more of Washington. If this is your one and only chance, do the move and get Levy, but if you can hold off a week or two, then do it.

Question:

Out of that group, Ray Lewis should be your man and I would be quick about it!

Hey Monk

Thanks to your coaching I am stacked at LB with Lofton, D'Qwell Jackson, P.Polushny, D.Johnson, D.Levy & D.Washington.
I have to cut it down eventually to 4 or 5 players.

I am fairly poorly set at DL:
Vanden Bosch, Morgan, Alex Brown.

I have been offered J.Allen for D'Qwell Jackson & Lofton.

I know that I am giving up a huge amount of skill. But the depth of exciting LB are much bigger than at DL.

Is this too crazy a move? In a dynasty league I will live with the mistake forever :)

Answer:
It's not as crazy as you think. Jared Allen is the Patrick Willis of DEs and there's not really anyone else that close to him in that department. Of course, some years a Dumervil or Trent Cole challenges, but for consistency sake in a dynasty league, he's the best. DQwell has Willis potential, but has never proved to stay healthy and Lofton has real inconsistency issues. Considering the rest of your core with the solid play of Poz and the upside of D Johnson, D Levy & D Wash, you can take some risks. You can pick up guys like Lenon, Anderson (Car), D. Smith (Jaqs)

I think I might do that, actually. DE's are super hard to come by and LBs are much easier, like you said.
