IDP Week 16 NFL Fantasy Football 2010 Playoffs & Championship

Just like last year, please go ahead and post your specific questions for you team and I'll answer them to the best of my ability.

If you're in the Championship, you're beyond waiver wire pickups so that's why I just ask for direct questions.

Hi Monk:

Looks like I survived and it's on to the title matchup. I've got Mayo (no brainer)and Bishop (probably another no brainer)along with Whitner and James Anderson, so my 4 IDP spots are filled with them. My question is can you toss out a few names of IDP'ers (non DL) that have lights out matchups this week and whether they may be better plays than Whitner or Anderson for me? Thanks.

I can start 4, which would you suggest?

Howdy,

Been coming to you all year for advice and it has been great, thanks!

Got a DL question for you, can you please pick two to start: Ahtyba Rubin, Robert Mathis, James Hall, and Carlos Dunlap. Tackles are 1, assists are .5, sacks are 3, FF/FR are 2.

I'm leaning towards Mathis and Rubin because I think San Diego will get a lead and run, which doesn't work in Dunlap's favor. I dropped Hall last week and of course that's when he got a sack, but he had been performing poorly for the past few weeks.

Thanks a lot, and happy holidays,

Matt

Paris Lenon or Takeo Spikes or some notables that I can pick up: David Hawthorne//Keith Brooking

Also, for DB's, can you pick 2:

Atogwe,Chung, TJ Ward, Reed Doughtry?

thanks for your help in bringing me to the championships this year!!

first off u the man monk! I play in a 3lb league and have poz mayo and andersen who has not been playing well as of late. do i move on andersen and if so 4 who? Chaney, the philly replacement is a beast but worth the risk? also tillman and mcfadden have been slipping so i played the hot hand dahl but anyone else i should eye to replace 1 w?

Championship week, pick two: Donte Whitner (vs NE), Reed Doughty (vs Jac, if he's back from head injury), Chris Hope (vs KC), or Yeremiah Bell (vs Detroit, been incredibly inconsistent the latter half of this season).

I've got Pos, Bishop, and Beason heading into week 16 (and the championship). I could grab Chaney (vs Minny) or T. Spikes (vs Stl) off the wire. Should I pull the trigger on one of these studs?

thanks :)

Based on matchups, who should I start at corner back? Jarius Byrd vs. New England or A.Verner vs. KC.

Verner seems like the obvious pick for week 17 vs. the Colts, right?

J said...

I have the following players slotted to start.

Flex: Jon Beason
LB: Ray Lewis (only 5.5 points last 2 weeks)
LB: James Farrior
CB: Verner
CB: Richard Marshall (1 point last week).

With 1 point tackles, 1/2 point assists, 3 point sacks and INTs and 1 point passes defensed would you drop anyone above for anyone below.

Timmons (now that Polamolu is out he was everywhere)
Jamar Chaney
Terence Newman
Tekeo Spikes
Reed Doughty
Desmond Bishop
Tyjuan Hagler
Dimitri Patterson
Captain Munnerylyn

Thanks for all your help this year!!!

I'm in my league championship this coming weekend, and I need a bit of advice. Who should I start of my linebackers? I have to start three of the five I own and I usually start a fourth in my D flex spot.

My linebackers are:

Paul Posluszny
Lawrence Timmons
Lance Briggs
James Anderson
Desmond Bishop

Its pretty much a given that I'm playing Timmons and Pos. Anderson has been slipping significantly lately, but has done far better than Briggs in recent weeks, although I have this feeling Briggs is due (as of this post Briggs hasn't posted his week 15 performance). And the X-factor is Des Bishop. The weeks I play him, he does fair to middling and the weeks I bench him he goes off, a'la this week where he was nasty against the Pats and rode my pine. I'm thinking I should roll with him. Which four would you start? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Monk:

Been carrying James Anderson all season for the most part and he's been good. However, I've noticed the last 2 weeks he's been down. 12 team league, only 1 LB is used. There are a lot on the wire including D. Johnson, KC, T. Spikes and J. Farrior.

First season doing IDP. Advice?

Hey Monk, I'm in the Superbowl and I thought I would like to give credit where credit is due for suggesting guys like Pat Chung and T.J. Ward back in August. They were my last 2 picks in the draft and guys in my league were laughing at me as they said "who?" Well who's laughing now. Without your suggestion I wouldn't have taken a flier on those important difference makers so thanks for showing up each week with exploitable match-ups. I hope you keep those suggestions coming next season! Enjoy the holidays!

Thanks for your help and keep up the great work.

Monk,

1. Which 3 players would you start at LB out of Jerod Mayo, Desmond Bishop, Lance Briggs and David Hawthorne? Standard scoring with extra points for sacks, fumbles, ints' and touchdowns.

2. Which 2 players would you start at db out of Eric Berry, Javier Arenas, OJ Atogwe and Alteraun Verner? Same scoring as above and you get return yards added to score. Would you reccomend picking someone up off waivers?

Thanks for the advice throughout the season. I have to choose between DeAngelo Hall or Craig Dahl for the championship game. Sack-4. INT-4. FF-2. Solo tackle-1. Dahl has played great lately but Hall is almost leader in Fpoints.

Monk, I finally made it to the championship, many thanks to you over the last few years, I've learned a ton both from you and on my own when it comes to the "D" Take your time with my questions!

So I took your advice from last week and played Levy, took my own advice and started Ward over Chung, and took your advice on not starting Chaney!! Still smoked my buddy 290 to 210.

Here are my players I start 4LB's and 2 DB's

Willis @STL
Poz @NE
AJ Hawk @NYG
Des Bishop @NYG
Jamar Chaney @MIN
Levy @MIA

Whitner @NE
Ward @BAL
Chung @BUF

I’m leaning towards Willis, Poz, Hawk, Bishop, and Ward and Whitner. What do you think about this Chaney guy vs MIA, and my line up all together? Thanks again Will

Hi!

CB: I have Alterraun Verner and Brandon Flowers (+ Kelvin Hayden). Do you recommend Kyle Arrington or Captain Munnerlyn in places of Flowers?

DE: I my number 2 DE is Chris Kelsay. Will he OK against the NE? I have Freeney and David Bowens (from Cleveland) on the bench, and the best guys on waiver are Alex Brown, Cory Redding, Ray Edwards, Carlos Dunlap and Greg Hardy.

Unknown said...

My league has silly scoring for our two IDP slots (one D flex, one LB). .5 per solo tackle, 0 for tackle assist, 3 sack, 2 int, 1 for pass defensed. But we also have 20 yards per point for returns, which some IDPs do.

Given that, who's a better pick for week 16: Justin Tuck or Trent Cole? Or should I go for a return yards player like Arenas, Mccann, or Munnerlyn?

Anonymous said...

I've got Pos, Beason, Bishop and Farrior for the championship this week - and can play 3. Who would you start? Also could pick up T. Spikes and Chaney. What do you think?

Anonymous said...

Monk-

Made it to the superbowl. Gotta max out every point on D as my offensive players are a M*A*S*H unit. Two part question:

1). Best four out of these six: McRath, Lenon, Wake, Cole, Verner, Whitner.

2). Anybody above you would zap for somebody else waiver-wise? I can still get guys off the wire.

Thanks,
-Jim K.

Anonymous said...

Jim K. here again with scoring clarification:

TK-1
ATK-0.5
Sacks,picks,fumble recovery-3
Passes defensed-1
Return yards off TO's- 1 per 10
Def. TD's-6

Thanks again. You helped a bunch this year and we're getting paid win or lose.

Hi Monk, love the website.

I need one CB. My best options are Josh Wilson, Dimitri Patterson, Drayton Florence, and Jason Allen.

Also, for DE, I need 2, and I have C. Clemons and C. Campbell, but should I sub in Carlos Dunlap for one of them?

Scoring Scheme:
2 pts per tackle
1 pt per assist
3 pts per pass def.
5 pts per sack
6 pts per int
5 pts per forced fumble

Thanks

Your Question:

Tk 1, Ass tk 1, sack 2, int 2 + 1 pt/10 interception yards.

LB (Pick 3):
Laurinaitis, D.Johnson, D.Levy, or B.Cushing

DB (Pick 3):
Y.Bell, C.Dahl, B. Grimes, Doughty, D.Whitner or T. Newman.

DL (Pick 3):
T.Cole, J.Allen, C.Dunlap, B.Keisel, or T. McBride.

I'll start with the DB question first because I absolutely love Brent Grimes vs NO. He makes acrobatic interceptions every time he faces Drew Brees and I'm excited about him this week

The good news is you can't go wrong with your group. If I were to put them in order of points scored this week, I'd go Doughty, Grimes, Whitner, Bell, Dahl Newman  The only one really don't like that much is Newman vs. Arizona.

Your LBs are Lauranimal, D. Johnson & Levy  I don't know what you'll get with Cushing facing Tebow and potentially no Moreno

DL I like Dunlap and what's he's been doing & I don't love Allen vs. Vick, but he might make it up in tackles or maybe a sack, but Vick is so quick.  I do like Cole vs. Minnesota. He should get a sack.  It's just too hard to bench Allen, but Keisel has a really soft matchup too.

I think I'd have to go Cole, Allen & Dunlap for my championship.  Your putting your best players on the field. I'll admit that I could easily be convinced to use Keisel too.

Your Question:

My question is can you toss out a few names of IDP'ers (non DL) that have lights out matchups this week and whether they may be better plays than Whitner or Anderson for me? Thanks.

RJ, Takao Spikes comes to mind that kid Chaney (I think his name is) for the Eagles. He's put up monster numbers everytime he get's playing time. You're probably right about James Anderson, but he's the one on the list this week that I trust the least. I think you'll do just as well with Spikes or the Eagles LB and they each have more upside.

Your Question

Answer:
James Hall & Dunlap were my gut, but I really am terrible with lineman and guess wrong all the time too. Sorry I can't help more. I like your thinking on Dunlap, but just when you thing there's a pattern with DLs, they have a 3 sack day and you say "WTF". So just put your two best athletes and matchups out there which you did do with Mathis & Rubin.

@ AmieK

Congrats on making it!

Your Question:

Answer:

Lenon or Spikes is sooooo close. Wow. Spikes has a lot to play for in that game vs. STL and he's facing Steven Jackson so I think I'd go Spikes

DBs I like Doughtry (f his head ok) and Ward's matchup is outstanding. If not Doughtry then Chung.

Your Question:

I've got Pos, Bishop, and Beason heading into week 16 (and the championship). I could grab Chaney (vs Minny) or T. Spikes (vs Stl) off the wire. Should I pull the trigger on one of these studs?

thanks :)

Answer:

You know what, I think you should grab at least one of them. I really like Bishop vs. NYG, but he still might only get you an average 6 tackle week. And although Pos is a stud, his matchup is so so for me and Beason is nice vs. the Steelers tonight and should be fine, but I work about "fine". Both Chaney & Spikes have the potential to more than make up for a potential let down you may have at WR, RB, TE or QB. That's how I view my defensive guys. They need to make up for my let downs that always happen to a Miles Austin or a slow Big Ben game or a non existent Wes Welker or Hines Ward week.

I'd feel better if you had a homerun guy in place. And I would feel better if I had Spikes or Chaney in place of Beason. Unless your rolling with Manning, Andre Johnson, Vincent Jackson and Johnny knox with Peyton Hillis & Steven Jackson etc. If you have a lineup like this, then stay with the sure things that you already have. But if you have a Wes Welker (who's not playing for much in bad weather) or Malcolm Floyd or Knowshon Moreno/Pierre Thomas/Joseph Addia, you need a guy who can hit a potential homerun for you to put in place of Beason.

Unknown said...

Your Question:

Based on matchups, who should I start at corner back? Jarius Byrd vs. New England or A.Verner vs. KC.

Verner seems like the obvious pick for week 17 vs. the Colts, right?

Answer:

Verner does seem like no brainer. There's some risk there, but huge reward too so I do like it.

I have the following players slotted to start.

Flex: Jon Beason
LB: Ray Lewis (only 5.5 points last 2 weeks)
LB: James Farrior

With 1 point tackles, 1/2 point assists, 3 point sacks and INTs and 1 point passes defensed would you drop anyone above for anyone below.

Jamar Chaney
Terence Newman
Tekeo Spikes
Reed Doughty
Desmond Bishop
Tyjuan Hagler
Dimitri Patterson
Captain Munnerylyn

Thanks for all your help this year!!!

Answer:

Wow! That is some serious talent to have on the bench. If you want to have balls of steal, you can make your lineup

Flex: Bishop (awesome matchup vs. NYG)
LB: Chaney
LB: Spikes
CB: VErner
CB: Doughty (if head hurt, then Marshall)

or Mix it up to be safe & have homerun potential
Flex: Jon Beason
LB: Bishop
LB: T. Spikes
CB: Verner
CB: Doughty (if head hurt, then Marshall)

or safer yet with homerun
Flex: Chaney
LB: Jon Beason
LB: D. Bishop
CB: Verner
CB: Doughty (or Marshall)

These combinations depend on your offense and how much of a risk you need to take. If your RBs are Green Ellis & Bradshaw, for instance, you might need option 1 and really go for the fences.

My linebackers are:

Paul Posluszny
Lawrence Timmons
Lance Briggs
James Anderson
Desmond Bishop

Answer:

Your lineup is very similar to mine. I like Bishop vs. NYG as your solid guy and Pos is unbenchable.

So that leaves Timmons, who had a monster game for the first time in a while last week. That's not enough to give me trust. And I also have Briggs & Anderson. Timmons is extremely tempting to me, but I never know when Farrior or Woodley or even Harrison will steal it all away from him in the box scores. So I went Chaney vs. Minnesota. It's a big risk and I was torn between Chaney or Spikes, but like the big upside of Chaney. Timmons is by far the safer guy and perhaps even Briggs or Anderson fit that same category of safety. They all have elite IDP #'s, but with WRs like Mike Williams, Mike Thomas, Miles Austin & Earl Bennett on my team, I must swing for the fences to even come close to my opponents M. Colton, Andre Johnson & Hicks lineup.

Can you give me two great Dl matchups and who would you use as tier 1 matcup DBS and 3 LBs. I have Allen DBs tillman, delmas, reed and elam
LBs Farrior,Briggs,Greenway,levy,Bishop and Spikes

Answer:

I like Grimes (ATL) vs NO as a potential waiver wire guy, but you can't go too wrong with the guys you have. I like Elam's matchup, but Ward and him seem to be switching rolls again after the last 2 weeks. If that is Asher Allen for MIN, I do like that vs. Philly. Tillman is always a potential IDP point guy and then Elam on that list.

LBs would be Bishop, Spikes and Farrior (but Levy is close)

@Mark
Question

If you played one, and only one, LB this week of the following 2, who would you play?

Jon Beason

It's absolutely meaningless for both Denver & Houston. Doesn't mean Cushing & DJ won't still be pros, but I trust Timmons & Beason more. Beason always has his motor on and this came actually means a lot to the Steelers.
