IDP Week 8 NFL Fantasy Football 2010 Waiver Wire Pick Ups

Immediate Waiver Wire Pick Ups (all in order by priority)

LBs:

MLB Zac Diles HOU - the smart money is on Diles to replace MLB D. Ryans for the rest of the year. There's huge potential there.

OLB Keith Rivers CIN vs. Miami week 8. He's been getting better and better each week and, although has a few off games, I don't think he'll have one vs. MIA. He just finished with 7 solos and has been looking great.

OLB Justin Durant JAC was back week 6 and looked like the only Jaquar who cared about playing in that crappy MNF game vs. TEN. This week, that hustle resulted in 7 solos and an assist.  He was a sleeper of mine coming into the year and I like him. As an example of where I would rank him; I would want Dhani Jones of the Bengals more than both Rivers or Durant, but I think K. Rivers & Durant is right behind the IDP level of Dhani Jones. Durant is higher than a "fill-in" or bye week because I think he's going to be good for the rest of the year. So he has the potential of being more of a "long-term" add. As does. K. Rivers.

ILB Stephen Cooper SD is a past elite IDP stud. He fell from grace last year, but has been slowly scratching back up the ranks over the last 2 weeks and with 9 solos week 7 to follow up with a 6 solo, 2 pass deflection week 6 is enough to recommend him for TEN week 8 and possibly beyond.

LB S. Fujita CLE is on bye week 8, but he deserves to be on your radar. He finished with 10 solos, a sack and an INT against New Orleans week 7. He's not overly consistent, but he does have 3.5 sacks this year and 2 forced fumbles so you could do much worse deeper leagues and he's almost guaranteed to be on your waiver wire

DBs:

Reminder, CB G. Toler ARI is still the top IDP CB in the league and does not belong on your waiver wire. But if he's there, he belongs on your team, now.

S . Ndukwe CIN vs. MIA week 8. If he]s on your wire, he belongs on your team. Look back at his box scores and see if your safety is as consistent and solid as this guy. If the answer is "No", then replace your guy with him. Delmas might be an example. I haven't compared Delmas to Ndukwe yet, but my hunch is Ndukwe is the guy you want more.

CB Nate Clements SF has been much more solid than I realized this year. This week was 8 solos, an assist, a sack and a forced fumble vs. CAR and week 8 he gets pass heavy Denver. If he's available, he'll get you some nice points and could earn permanent residence on your roster.

S Erik Coleman ATL
is on bye week 8, but he has been an IDP stud in the past, but was benched and partially injured most of the season. It looks like he's back and had himself a very solid game week 7 with 7 solos and an assist.

DE:

(DT required only) The DT you want this year is Colin Cole for the Seahawks in leagues that you must start DTs. He has a boatload of tackles compared to other DTs and had 7 in week 7.

DE Dwan Edwards BUF had one of those games that you often see from players who play their former teams. I should have seen that coming vs. Baltimore.  Regardless, he is a very nice talent and with 7 total tackles and a sack, can you think of a reason not give him a try in your DL carousel of guesses?  Unless you have Trent Cole, Osi or Mario Williams, who can you trust at DL?

(ALL Credit for this next call goes to our fellow IDP brother Eli) DT Tommy Kelly OAK got a sack for his 3rd week in a row and I was happy with him on my team this week. I'm keeping him and hope he has a good game agains Seattle week 8.

DE I. Idonije CHI has a bye week 8, but he had his second good game in a 3 week span with 5 tackles, a sack, forced fumble and pass deflection.

Bye Week & Injury Fill-ins:

S. C. Peprah GB is so tempting and I really like him. I picked him up last minute week 7, but it's difficult to know what safety will be starting for GB. Bigby could be back at any moment and they can pull Peprah for another safety at anytime. So he's risky, but if you know he'll be starting, he's worth the chance.

LB. Mario Haggan DEN is a nice fill in in week 8 vs.SF. He had 8 tackles week 7.

LB J. Belcher KC is worth a flyer against Buffalo in week 8.

S Courtney Greene JAGs is worth a fill-in after finishing with 12 total tackles vs. KC and has the Cowboys in week 8.

Mirages:

LB David Bowens CLE had 2 INTs for TDs.  This is the game of the old man's life, but don't let the skewed stats fool you when looking at high scoring LBs in your league. This is not a guy you want to rely on for your team.

DT Marcus Thomas DEN
had 10 total tackles vs. OAK week 7. Hi previous week were not anywhere close to this so don't pull the trigger based on this performance.

LB Gary Guyton NE shares ILB position with Brandon Spikes. You never can tell which one will have the bigger game because these guys switch based on packages, which can change on the fly during the game.

DB Chris Owens ATL finished with 11 total tackles covering Ochocinco.

Observations:

So who owned DeAngelo Hall this week? haha 7 solos and 4 INTs! Congratulations!

S Patrick Chung left the game with a knee injury so no points for me and no points for you equals a big pile of hot smelly poo. Between him and giving BUF matchup Andra Davis a try, I had some bad week spots on my D this week. Luckily KC D. Johnson had a hell of a week for me. But I'm so mad that I went against my better judgement and left Greg Toler on the wire. He had 12 total tackles again. Does this guy have any bad games!

I'm thankful my last name isn't the same as the guy from the Eagles, "Fokou". I grew up in DC and I think I would have been beat up a lot whenever I told people my last name.

LB Timmons PIT has his first "slow" game of the year. We'll keep on eye if this becomes a trend, but he'll rebound nicely against NO next week.

D. Washington outperformed partner Paris Lenon by a good bit week 7. Gotta see it again to know if this is a new trend, but Lenon let down quite a few IDP guys this week.

Curse S Quentin Mikell's PHI & his inconsistency. What a week he had though.

Ray Lewis went off and I benched him. Looking back, I'd do it again so I can't beat myself up, but I sure could have used that 31 point performance.

Timmons moved to outside LB after Woodley hurt his hamstring, and the Dolphins abandoned the run game. It was a perfect storm for a let down. Timmons is a beast and arguably the best IDP player when playing inside LB, but I would definitely monitor Woodley's health and see if the Steelers keep Timmons outside.

DB (3 starters):
I have Harper, Y.Bell & Whitner

On the waiver wire is:

Monk,
Always love the recaps/lineup advice...
Got a LB question for you:
I currently start DJ Williams and Poz, but there are some good players available on the wire, namely: Mayo, Cushing, Derrick Johnson, Diles and Rivers. Of those 7 guys, which two are the best to roll with each week?
Thanks!

@ Eli

I see what you mean now after looking under the comments section of my blog. It looks like my response I did, didn't post. That really sucks because I spent 2 hours answering all the questions in the Word document here at work on Thursday. (that's how I do it to get around looking like it's "work" and then I go out and hit "post". I remember I didn't get a chance to go back to the site to double check but everything looking like it went through normally. But now that I see you asking what happened to me last week, I see that none of it posted. That was a waste. Sorry about that. So no one's questions were answered for week 7. Ugh!

Anyway, absolutely on your call for Tommy Kelly. The way I look at it is you guys bring people to my attention as much as I bring them to yours and we all help each other out. The bottom line is that we all try our best to win each week and whatever it takes to make that happen.

I like BJ Raji a lot too, but after a while I stop listing the guys I've recommended over and over because they should be off the wire by now. Like Bishop, for instance. No need to tell anyone to pick him up anymore. I feel that same way about Raji. To me, he's like J. Babin or Kelsay or many of these other DEs that have become no brainers to start because no one else is doing anything at their position. So I try to recommend the brand new waiver guys, but that's a good point to bring up good matchups. I'm not sure if the Jets are one though as Sanchez isn't sacked very often behind that line of theirs and he releases the ball quickly on his short passing scheme. Do you mean from a "tackle" point of view with Raji?

I think Steven Tulloch has become a MUST start and earned that over the last few weeks. And I really feel Poz will bounce back. Baltimore got super surprised by Buffalo and switched to the pass much earlier than expected so Poz had a mediocre game. I love the Timmons vs. NO matchup as long as Timmons is back in the middle this week and not playing outside again. Eitherway, I think I'd go Tulloch & Timmons. Too hard to resist.

How do you feel about Chris Clemons going forward? He got it done once again last week and has posted double digit points in my league 3 out of the past 4 weeks.

@Copenhagen

Your Question:

At LB I have (3 starters):
Laurinaitis, Cushing, D.Johnson, Posluszny & Lenon.

Should any of these be changed for:
R.McIntosh, T.Hali, K.Rivers, C.Session, A.Davis, J.Durant & S.Fujita?

Answer:
I'm a little concerned about Lenon. I cannot recommend replacing him with Session yet. But that is exactly what I would do if Session out plays Lenon in week 8 and Lenon has another 3 to 5 tackle game. So lets see if ARI D. Washington is for real and Lenon is showing his new role on this team or if that was just a scheme type of game and that's whey D. Washington outplayed Lenon.

DB (3 starters):
I have Harper, Y.Bell & Whitner

On the waiver wire is:
Consodine, L.Milloy, K.Moore, C.Ndukwe, P.Oliver, K.Phillips, B.Grimes & E.Coleman.

Answer:
I like what you have.

DL (3 starters):
Raji, Kampmann & J.Allen

Waiver:
Vandenbosch,Idonje, C.Cole.

Answer:
You gotta stay put with what you have

@ Graham

Got a LB question for you:
I currently start DJ Williams and Poz, but there are some good players available on the wire, namely: Mayo, Cushing, Derrick Johnson, Diles and Rivers. Of those 7 guys, which two are the best to roll with each week?

Answer:

WOW, all I can tell you is who not to look at and that is Diles & Rivers.

From there, it is way too hard to choose. I would go ahead and stick with Williams & Poz. No strong reason. I feel like all those other guys are exactly the same as Williams & Poz. Unless you get more points for "big plays". I can tell you that Cushing & D. Johnson are more know for "extras" than the other guys. Sacks, forced fumbles, INTs, pass deflections, etc. But any of those guys have big play potential. So just stick with what you have.

@ Whodat

Cushing is the man in the middle as of Monday ----

Thank you, that's really interesting. We'll watch this.

Your question:

Who do you think is the best pickup going forward? tackle=1 point, assist=1/2, pass defensed = 1 pick/sack = 3

Dhani Jones, Karlos Dansby, Chad Greenway, or Z. Diles?

Answer:
Definitely Chad Greeenway. I would love to own that guy!

Zac Diles @ IND

Cheers!

-Zac Diles
-Jon Beason

should I cut my losses and just give up on beason or will he start making some plays? Hali is producing sacks but not many tackles and has posted zeroes twice this year...

starting 3 LBs and 1 D (any position), scoring :

Tackle Solo 1,
Tackle Assist .5
Sack 4
Interception 5
Fumble Force 3
Fumble Recovery 2
Defensive Touchdown 6
Safety 5
Pass Defended 1
Block Kick 5

thanks

@ Ryan

Question

How do you feel about Chris Clemons going forward? He got it done once again last week and has posted double digit points in my league 3 out of the past 4 weeks.

Answer:

There's 2 Chris Clemons in the league who play D, but I'm assuming you mean the DT who plays for Seattle over the Miami safety. I could be wrong about that, but I like the Seattle one going forward the rest of the year. Not the Miami one.

@ Sarah

Question:
Thanks so much for this blog -- it is the best. Which three would you start this week? Whitner, Verner, B. Flowers or Ndukwe? Thanks!

Answer:
Absolutely Sarah. Definitely Whitner, then Ndukwe, then Verner vs. SD

@ Eli

Chung looks like a game time decision so I'd look elsewhere like Ndukwe if you can get him

I think benching Allen for Hunter is OK. You know how I feel about all d-linemen. It's just a roll the dice game if you're honest with yourself. I would look at guys going against the new QB in SF or vs. the Jaqs. Big Ben is still an easier guy to sack because he holds the ball so long and of course the Bears when they come back from bye. But which guy to start going against those teams is still a roll of the dice.

Ya monk from a tackle point of view I think raji is a great dt got this week against the jets... I can see him getting around 3-4 tks and a sack. Sanchez doesn't get sacked alot but i feel like raji may break through.

Again, tackle=1 point, assist=1/2, pass defensed = 1 pick/sack = 3

Answer:
I like Chad Greenway a ton! No, I would drop Beason for Greenway. I dropped Lance Briggs for Desmond Bishop and that has worked out very well for me the last 3 weeks. Sometimes big names blind us from the reality of the "here and now". And the reality is Greenway is a much better IDP guy then Beason right now.

Unknown said...

@ Trang

I live in houston, had the news on, and they confirmed that cushing is replacing demeco ryans for the middle. Kubiak even came out and said it.

Answer. Yes, this is true and does make sense. They smart money was on Diles, but I like this move more. Diles will take Cushing's old spot so Diles is still extremely valuable and should be owned and started.

Question:
jason hunter or dwan edwards this week?

Answer:
Hunter, but all I did was flip a coin. Feel free to do the same. ;^) Just being honest about predicting D-linemen. As I told Eli. I would look at guys going against the new QB in SF or vs. the Jaqs. Big Ben is still an easier guy to sack because he holds the ball so long and of course the Bears when they come back from bye. But even with that slight knowledge or insight, you can still basically roll dice or let your kid sister or Grandma pick a name they like and rest easy knowing you really have ZERO input on guestimating who will go off in the Dlineman world. My advice is to NEVER stress or lose sleep over a d-linemen choice. I grab them like I grab a kicker. One that looks like they have the possibility of a good matchup. But just like my though process in grabbing Denver K Matt Prater vs. Oakland would get a lot of points ended up getting me 2 points and losing me my game by 4 points. But if I drop him this week, he'll end up getting 15 points and the guy I pickup will get me 2 points. So just don't drive yourself crazy. We have very little control over projecting Kickers matchups or D-Linemen matchups.

@ Rick

Question:
|would you take toler over whitner?

Answer:
I would not do Toler over Whitner. Only because Toler does have his 22 point weeks, but he also has 8 point weeks. Where Whitner is a consistent 15 points with upside. So that's why I wouldn't.

Question:

Also re: DL - I dumped J Allen. I couldn't stand him anymore. Who should I pick up to replace him: Mario Williams (we have a short bench and the guy dumped him in the bye week) I assume would be first, but would you consider Tamba Hali over Williams? Or Chris Kelsay? Or maybe even Chris Clemons?

If Tamba Hali is a DE in your league then HELL yes! Hali over Williams. (Hali is an LB in my league)

_____________

Sure, give Chris Long a try|

@ Clyde

Question:
What's your take on Jared Allen? Should I pull the plug on him already and pick up one of these guys?

DE Edwards, DT Kelly, DE Raji and DE Idonije.

If you had to pick, which 2 are your top picks going forward?

P.S: Thanks for your advice on Bishop. He's gold.

Answer:
I like Raji best out of that group right now

@ Sage n Sour

Question:
In my tackle-heavy league, if you had to pick just one, who'd it be? (for this week and even beyond):

Clint Sessions vs HOU
Paul Posluszny @ KC
Bradie James vs JAC
Desmond Bishop/Hawk @ NYJ
Zac Diles @ IND

Answer:
For this week and beyond, it's THE POZ. He'll be the one on top at the end of the season as long as he stays healthy.

@ Flex

Question:

1/2 point for an assist and 3 for INTs and Sacks, who do you think is the right choice for a D flex spot.

Whitner, Bradie James, Dhani Jones or Desmond Bishop?

Also would you take Bishop, James or Jones over Beason going forward (should I drop beason)?

Answer:
Out of that group, I'm starting Desmond Bishop and I would drop Beason for him.

@ Renny

Bishop is rolling!
Do you see any value in Ed Reed now that he's back? Am planning to start him next week as Landry has a BYE, and Kenny Phillips isn't setting the world on fire.

Answer:
Yes, I like Ed Reed now that he's back. He's a fine bye week fill in for Landry, but don't drop Landry for him.

Question:

Hey Monk Man, how do u rank these LB's this week and going forward:
Levy, Sessions, Durant, Rivers or Wake?

Answer:
Going forward, it's Sessions, Durant, Rivers, Wake, Levy (Levy has a ton of upside, but we have to see it first. If he shows it this weekend, Levy might jump ahead Durant and possibly even above Sessions if he really goes off. I'm watching Levy closely)

Question:

Should I drop Paris Lenon, James L. or Osi for Zac Diles? According to reports I read, Zac will remain at the WLB position.

Answer:
Personally, I ALWAYS start a LB over a DE when I have the choice. DE are very unpredictable and I take the sure points of a Zac Diles over the "chance" of Osi getting 2 sacks in a game. So I'm a wimp and would go all LBs, but I'm always jealous of the guys that have the balls to start and DE and then watch that DE get them 30 points, but the following week, they could just as easily get them 2 points. Dangerous game that I don't mess around with.

@RJ

I've got 2 'D' positions, a 'DB' position, and a 'LB' position to fill. Here are the troops:

LB: James Anderson, Derrick Johnson, Jerrod Mayo, Des Bishop

DB: Chung and Whitner

There are a bevy of guys on waiver but none that measure up to these guys other than maybe Greenway, Sessions, and Lenon. What's your take on plays this week?

Answer:
Chung might be out this week so you may need to get Ndukwe or the SS from Green Bay to fill in this week there. If you only start 1 DB, it's Whitner. Then I would go All your LBs minus D Johnson this week. Bishop vs. the Jets is better than D. Johnson vs. Buffalo considering you know the Jets are a run team that can and will run on Green Bay all day. Buffalo may have to switch to the passing game early and often and Fred Jackson may only get a handful of carries. I LOVE Mayo vs. Vikes and LOVE Anderson vs. SJax

Anonymous said...

Who do you recommend I start out of James L., Paris Lenon, Desmond Bishop and Zac Diles. I need to start 3.

Thank you for the help!

Unknown said...

@ CJ

Who do you think will have a bigger impact (2nd half of the season) on IDP the rest of the way..

LB David Hawthorne SEA

or

LB Geno Hayes TBB

Answer:
Talk about your tie. Hayes has been more consistent, but not a "burner". Hawthorne is just living off last year's rep in name only. He's solid and definitely has upside, but so does Hayes. I think I'd stay Hayes unless Tatupu gets hurt.

@ Thoracic Outlet

Thanks for the site as usual, my question is, if you had to cut one of the following LB's who would it be?

-Zac Diles
-Jon Beason
-Bradie James
-Tamba Hali
-Desmond Bishop

should I cut my losses and just give up on beason or will he start making some plays? Hali is producing sacks but not many tackles and has posted zeroes twice this year...

Answer:
I know I want Bishop, Diles, James, Beason and I love Hali, but his value is completely dependent on sacks and that always scares me. Sometimes he's used as DE in situations and I always want an LB over DE. I would drop Beason for Hali in your league. Hali is on fire and as long as you can pick Beason back up in case he does come back to his old ways (which is highly unlikely without Thomas Davis), I'd do it.

starting 3 LBs and 1 D (any position), scoring :

Tackle Solo 1,
Tackle Assist .5
Sack 4
Interception 5
Fumble Force 3
Fumble Recovery 2
Defensive Touchdown 6
Safety 5
Pass Defended 1
Block Kick 5

Answer: If you can get a CB like Greg Toler or maybe even DE Osi who are "swing for the fences guys", I might get them as my 4th slot. Otherwise, Hali is your next closest "swing for the fences" guy. At least with guys like that you know you're giving yourself a chance to win. It's sorta like my WR Mike Williams of Seattle decision over Amendola in PPR. Amendola is very consistent and will probably give me Wes Welker like production. As steady 5 catch 50 yard performance, but I'm currently losing games with guys like Amendola and Welker. So I'll put Mike Williams getting 10 catches 2 games in a row (even though he was terrible prior to those games) gives me the best chance to win. Maybe not against Oakland's shut down corner, but overall, he's more of a swing for the fences guy that I need right now with so many other "neutral" (yet solid) guys on my team. That's what your D is like right now. Beason would be just one more "average" guy among many on your team. Hali is your boom or bust guy, as is Toler, as is Osi.

That's fantastic that you can get Brees for an LB. I'd let him pick anyone he wants from that group of LBs you have. That way you don't have to decide.
