IDP Week 4 NFL Fantasy Football 2010 Waiver Wire Pick Ups - D'Qwell Jackson is out for the year

I'm doing something a little different this week. I'm providing my "raw" game by game comments. The * bold ones with the star * next to them are immediate pick ups and I put (watch) next to the ones that are not ready to pick up, but are getting close. I thought leaving the notes in this one might help you a bit more on my thoughts of guys who are too good to be waiver wire guys so I don't usually talk about them. If you don't have time to read those, just skim to the bold names because those are the guys you can pick up immediately.

Game by Game observations & trends:

D'Qwell Jackson is out for the year. UUUUUHHHHHGGGGG!!!!

(watch) Michael Boley is too inconsistent to trust

* SS Kenny Phillips NYG is working back into football shape and trusting in the healing of his injury. I'm feeling it's time to add him to your roster if you can. He's in one of those schemes like a TJ Ward in CLE and he's got MAJOR athleticism and upside.

trend - DBs do well vs. the Giants (Chicago plays NYG in week 4  CB Z. Bowman CHI or T. Jennings is a nice sneaky play in this one.

* LB James Anderson might be an SLB, but he's out-producing Jon Beason by a good bit so far this year. I picked him up and started him over D. Johnson this week and it worked out well for me.

(watch from a distance) LB Dan Connor clearly is coming out of the game on multiple defensive packages

no brainer observation: LB L. Timmons Pit continues to be a top IDP stud this year. (watch Woodley though. He really broke out at the end of last year and has strong IDP potential)

* LB Quincy Black TB continues to look very good and is a nice pick up if he can be had in your league

observation: SS Patrick Chung NE has been a lot more stud than dud. I'm sticking with him as a stud this year. (Thinking he might pull away from TJ Ward like T. Branch pulled away from L. Delmas last year) I see Chung finishing very similar to Brian Dawkins numbers last year

(watch) SS D. Whitner BUF who came alive this week with 7 solos 3 assists vs. NE. I don't think he's trustworthy enough yet though, but definitely deserves to be watched closely. Also seeing a Bryan Scott sighting again, but I think it's at LB. The Bills linebackers are a mess without Poz.

observation: LB Banta-Cain NE can't be trusted from week to week

observation: LB Ray Lewis BAL continues to disappoint for where he was drafted and what's expected of him. Starting a guy like CAR James Anderson over him next week is not crazy at all.

observation: LB D. Johnson KC (3 solos 2 assists) was outperformed by (watch) ILB J. Belcher (7 solos 3 assists) this week. Something to keep an eye on. It may have just been the direction that SF ran this week.

* LB z. Diles HOU was a stud again

trend: Start ALL Safeties vs. Houston. Sensabaugh for Dallas confirmed this trend this week. He's usually lousy, but his 7 solos confirmed that even lousy guys do well vs. Houston. Next week T. Branch owners can rejoice. Even * FS Michael Huff OAK is a deep sleeper next week vs. Houston if you need a bye week fill in.

observation: LB Greenway MIN is such a stud this year!

trend: LBs get a bump in production vs. MIN (Vikes are on bye next week though)

observation: LB Levy DET was a ghost this week in his 1st game back. Keep this in mind for DQ in CLE next week. I'd keep him on your bench his first game back to feel out how much they play him.

* SS CC Brown DET is a pretty consistent IDPer. He's worth a strong look for your roster if your frustrated with your DB or SS or your guys is on bye

observation: DE Vanden Bosch had 1 tackle this week. Man I hate trying to figure out DL & DEs. 10 tackles 1 week and 1 tackle another week. Gotta love the NFL.

observation: LB Sean Weatherspoon ATL is the real deal!

observation: LB Dunbar SAINTS is an apparition. Don't pick him up based on this weeks stats

* FS Considine Jags Time to add him. He's a solid guy to have on your team and he'll be on the field a lot this year.

(watch) CB Hayden IND got 10 solos and a forced fumble but that's because he was facing Orton who was VERY pass happy this week.

observation: FS Bethea IND is one of the top IDP guys in his position this year.

* LB Paris Lenon ARI is a top 5 IDP LB so far this year. What more can he do to show he deserves to be in our lineups. We better use him while we can. I don't see this lasting all year. He gets SD next week, which is an OK matchup

Hey Monks its Eli again so time for my weekly discussion with you :)

Q: I need a DB, CB, and a S i currently have if u rememember Antoine Winefield, Ward, and Chung... So are these guys enough to carry me at those positions or shud I be picking someone else... In my league Ward had 31 first two weeks this week he had 15.. Chung has def been the stud for me and Winefield had 29 this week..

Next Q:

Paris Lenon has done extremely well and seems to me is taking dansby place quite nicely do I get him or anyone else or timmons or dansby? OR stick with them?

Sorry but last two things..

One I believe u shud look into michael griffin and give him some consideration he has done very well the first three weeks (last week being mediocore) but 1 and 3 were above average just a thought

Hi Monk,

I guess we can downplay or possibly remove NEP DB D. Butler. I believe he might have lost his starting gig in New England. In your mind, who is a decent to good replacement for him.. a lot of guys are already taken in my league.. but C.C Brown and Michael Huff are still available.. who would you choose between the two.

CJ

My DBs are Chung, Pollard, Earl Thomas, Kenny Phillips and Darius Butler.

Matt C. said...

give me some dl help jared allen has a bye

Anyone know of any decent LBs that are listed as DLs or DBs? Played that angle last year like a fiddle.

Anonymous said...

What do you think of dropping Rodgers-Cromartie for Chung? My other DB's are Bethea and C. Woodson. Ain't dropping either of them.

Anonymous said...

Question for you, guy in our league just dropped Bart Scott, what are your thoughts on him, I haven't been paying any attention to their D???
Thanks,

Will

monk - i can't take Boley either. Who to replace him with? MY LBs:

Beason
Boley
D.Wash
Cushing

I'll hang onto Cushing and Beason, but the rest are underperforming.

Avail WW:

Belcher
Suggs
Siler
Burnett
Barton - who I kind of like now that DQ is done

Tim said...

Hey Monk!!

Would you rather pick up Sean Considine or Kenny Phillips this week?

Thanks!!

Unknown said...

@ marmstrong
Based on your waiver wire, I'd hold onto Boley, given your selection. Barton hasn't done much this year, but has very little upside. Belcher is the only one on that list with upside and potential, but I'd still keep Boley over any of those guys. He'll have some 13 tackle weeks and some 2 tackle weeks, but I think he ultimately out perform anyone you have on your wire

In my league Ward had 31 first two weeks this week he had 15.. Chung has def been the stud for me and Winefield had 29 this week..

Answer:
Yes, you're in good shape. I'm not opposed to Considine for Ward at this point though, but I think you're in good shape.

Next Q:
Paris Lenon has done extremely well and seems to me is taking dansby place quite nicely do I get him or anyone else or timmons or dansby? OR stick with them?

Answer: Dansby & Timmons are far superior for the season over Paris Lenon. I don't see Lenon keeping this up all season. He's not as good of an athlete as those other 2 and he's just in a good opportunity to make tackles.

____________

@Long.Live.The.Fade

Yes, D. Butler looked exciting in the first game I saw him in, but hasn't proved to be fantasy worthy. I like C.C Brown for the season, but I love Michael Huff 's matchup vs. the Texans this week

____________

@Matt C.

I picked up Robaire Smith in place of jared allen for my bye week, but I literally pull DLs out of a hat. They are nearly impossible to predict. Even when they have great or tough matchups, DLs have proven to be incredibly unpredictable from week to week. I'd almost need to be there to see what they eat for breakfast and how they slept on gameday because some of biggest bums end up with a 7 tackle week and some of the "elite" get zero points like a Mario Williams many weeks. So don't stress over it. They are almost exactly like picking a kicker. Start a guy against a crappy team and hope for the best.

____________

Your Question:
Anyone know of any decent LBs that are listed as DLs or DBs? Played that angle last year like a fiddle.

This is an excellent question: A couple successful guys I know of are Chris Kelsay BUF and Quentin Groves OAK & Travis LaBoy SF (in that order)

____________

@Will
Bart Scott started his first game this year with 6 solos, 3 assists and forced fumble. Since then it's been down hill with extremely low production. I'd stay away. Let's put it this way, if you're looking at Scott, I'd look Will Witherspoon, Andra Davis, Eric Barton or Scott Fujita before him. If they are all gone in your league and you have roster room, you could do worse than Bart Scott in deep leagues.

____________

@Tim
Out of Sean Considine or Kenny Phillips this week, I'd go Considine because he's been consistent all week

Hey Monk

Thank you for the help with the Jared Allen trade. It ended up being a valuable deal with the D'Qwell Jackson injury. I picked up Paris Lenon as you recommended with great succes.

My Lb's are now:
Poloushny, Lenon, Washington, Levy, D.Johnson.

Should any of these be released for Anderson or Weatherspoon?

The scoring system is:
Assisted Tackle 1 point
Fumble Recovered 2 points
Fumble Recovery TD 6 points
Fumble Recovery Yards 1 point for every 10 DFRYds
Defensive TD 6 points
Forced Fumble 1 point
Interceptions 2 points
Interception TD 6 points
Interception Yards 1 point for every 10 IntYds
Pass Defensed 1 point
Sack 2 points
Safety 6 points
Tackle 1 point

Also I am on the verge of trading Moreno for J.Beason.
Although I have countered with Moreno for Willis. (The owner have gathered a frightening team of Willis, Beason, Laurinaidis, Rudd & Cushing).

Should I accept the Beason trade if the Willis proposal is not accepted?

At RB I have C.Johnson, J.Stewart, C.Wells, M.Forte, M.Bush & Moreno.

Monk,

1. Would you pick up Considine over Delmas for the long term? I'm concerned about Delmas being limited by his groin injury, and Considine has been putting up consistent points. Also, any thoughts on Earl Thomas thus far?

2. Again over the long term, would you place Lenon or James Anderson over Cushing, Posluszny, or Derrick Johnson in value? I like Lenon and Anderson's numbers so far, but don't know what to make of them.

Thanks,
Mike

Who do you like better?

Lance Briggs @ NYG
Karlos Dansby vs. NE
Curtis Lofton vs. SF

You're welcome, I'm glad that Jared Allen trade worked out for you. Kinda feeling bad for the guy who took DQwell and sent you Allen though. That's cool how good of a deal you got right before the news came out though.

I'd drop Levy for Weatherspoon and Washington for J. Anderson. You might not be able to do that with D. Johnson on bye right now, but I we just haven't seen anything out of Levy. He's all hype up to this point and you saw how hype put Rolando McClain on a pedestal that he didn't deserve.

Given your running back situation, I'd go through with that move for Willis or Beason. Yes.

---------------------

Yes on Chung over Ward and the second add/drop of Lenon over D. Smith depends on how much talent you have on your waiver wire on a regular basis. Smith might end up being more valuable for the long run but Lenon is very hot, but Smith ain't bad either so if it's easy enough to grab talent during the year, then Lenon is well worth the risk.

---------------------

Your Question:
1. Would you pick up Considine over Delmas for the long term? I'm concerned about Delmas being limited by his groin injury, and Considine has been putting up consistent points. Also, any thoughts on Earl Thomas thus far?

Answer:
Delmas has obviously proved himself over a season and we know what he gives us. I think it's too early to panic on him. Considine is a wayward travelor up to this point in his career and has always showed flashes, but choosing him over Delmas is really risky for the whole year. If you have enough talent on your wire to survive from week to week. If there's any way you can play Considine and keep Delmas on your bench for now, I'd definitely do that. If you have Caddy Williams or D. Mason who are borderline backups for you, I'd drop them before Delmas. Earl Thomas is OK so far. But not ready to make the leap to IDP stud yet.

Your Question:
2. Again over the long term, would you place Lenon or James Anderson over Cushing, Posluszny, or Derrick Johnson in value? I like Lenon and Anderson's numbers so far, but don't know what to make of them.

Answer:
Definitely not over Cushing or the Wizard of Poz, but possibly over D. Johnson. Belcher's impact in the last KC game scared me a bit. He showed up big in the box scores and Johnson did not. If that is the beginning of a trend, I would definitely want Lenon or Anderson over him. I have both Anderson & Lenon on my team and dropped D. Johnson during this bye week. Hopefully I can get him back, but Belcher scared me enough to feel OK about that move. Every single game counts and you have to win NOW before you can think about planning for the playoffs. So dropping Johnson for Lenon is a "win now" move that I can live with until Lenon proves otherwise.

@Derrick

WOW, you've got some talent there! It's gotta be Lance Briggs vs. NYG and you may find that you won't go back to Ruud after owning Briggs. I also look at Dansby (not necessarily the NE matchup, but in general) as a permanent replacement over Ruud & possibly Briggs. Again, so much talent there. (not liking Lewis or Lofton so far though this year though)

---------------------

@ Marmstrong

Question:
My starters this week:
Ngata
Robaire
Beason
Boley
Chung
TJ Ward

Need to pick one among the follwing:
A.Wilson
C.Tillman
D.Hawthorne
K.Phillips

Answer:
You're going to think I'm nuts, but I love C. Tillman this week. Extremely matchup friendly and, although he's good, he's not Champ Bailey good so QBs are not scared to throw at him. I think he put's up the best numbers out of anyone in that group this week. You gotta go with your gut though. I just LOVE the matchup this week.

---------------------

Your Question:
I need to start 1 DB, 1 LB, and 2 Flex (DB or LB). I have Tyvon Branch, Louis Delmas, James L. (Rams), Ray Lewis and Paris Lenon. Who should I start? Thanks for all your help

Answer:
Delmas is battling a groin and is a concern. Ray Lewis has not impressed, but should be good decent vs. Pit.

So by process of elimination, sit Delmas and start the rest.

Monk,

How's it! New to the site and I love it. Immediately my #1 site for IDP info. I just pulled a 4 for 2 trade so I gotta drop 2 guys and it's coming down to D. Levy, D. Connor, and M. Boley. 1 guy must stay and must play this week until Cushing comes back next week for me. The other 2 must be released. Help me out here because the guy who stays I will play this week and he will also be a bye week replacement for future weeks.

Unknown said...

Question:

Should I start Zac Diles over Ray Lewis or James L. (Rams)?

Answer:
Funny you should ask that. I'm personally starting Diles over Ray Lewis this week in one of my leagues. I wouldn't do it over James L. though. However, I am starting Ray Lewis this week in my "regular" league. Sometimes I do that to cover myself across the board. Sorta like how I have K. Walter & Eddie Royal on 2 different teams this week. On one team I'm starting Royal and on the other I'm starting Walter. That way I don't have all my eggs in one basket and hopefully one will go off and help one of my teams this week

Monk, thanks for the fantastic site, this is the first time Ive posted a question so here goes:

League scoring:
Tackle Solo 1
Tackle Assist .5
Sack 4
Interception 5
Fumble Force 3
Fumble Recovery 2
Defensive Touchdown 6
Safety 5
Pass Defended 1
Block Kick 5

Positions: DE,DE,DT,LB,LB,LB,S,S,CB,CB,D

Jared Allen has a bye this week so Im starting groves at DE (it was him or clemons/bierman/seymour), i dont know if thats a good idea or not but mainly because he is an LB with DE eligibility.
my lineup is
Cole,Dockett,Quentin Groves
Diles,Beason,Wake
Chung,Godfrey,Cason,Bowman

I need to pick up 1 defensive player (any position), on the waiver wire that Im considering are

K Phillips, CC Brown, G Hardy,K Wimbley, Chris Clemons, Kroy Bierman, Richard Seymour,Stephen Cooper.
My questions are:
1) Who would you pick up out of those players?
2) Do you think Stephen Cooper is worth picking up or should I wait and see if/how he plays?
2) Would you drop anyone in my team for any of those players for the this week or beyond?
others on the waiver wire include Hali, Q Black, J Belcher, K Brooking, A Spencer, Orakpo, J Lacey and Aqib Talib.

I know ive thrown a lot of names out there, thanks a lot in advance.

Answer:
Based on your tackle scoring, your basically in a "big play" league. In big play leagues, you need "athletes" like a J. Peppers or C. Woodson over consistent IDP guys who rarely make HUGE plays.

As I've said about DE, it's such a crap shoot. My gut is Clemons for your league, but you'll kick yourself if you switch that and Groves goes off so just keep it.

If you can only pick up 1 at any position, I'd give K Wimbley a whirl. He's got a fantastic chance for a sack everytime he plays and he'll get you some tackles. I'd wait on Stephen Cooper, but he's been a stud in the past in IDP so he has real potential. I think you have to be ready to drop any of those guys for the right matchup and whoever has the hot hand at any moment. Right now it's K. Brooking & Quincy Black with the hot hands, but they're both on bye. So at this point I wouldn't make any moves, but guys like Spencer and Orakpo have fantastic potential in your league and I could see C. Wake going cold as Orakpo gets hot. You have to be ready to move on that in your waivers if the matchup or box scores call for it. But no immediate moves I see at this point.

Your Question:
Monk - I think i'm going to drop lofa Tatupu.. and in his place start Huff this week.

Basically i'm going to try and right matchups with our "D" spot all year.. what do you think?

Answer:
I like it. I do the same thing with one or two in my lineup as well. For instance, Ray Lewis & David Harris may have stud names, but James Anderson and Zac Diles will be starting over them this week.

__________________

@ Long Live The Fade

So on your end, it's really just Welker that your trading for Willis & TJ Ward since Diles will be an afterthought after Cushing comes back and Butler is a nothing IDP guy.

It really depends on your WRs. If your left with only Mark Clayton, Mike Sims Walker and Eddie Royal to man your crew every week than probably not. But if you already have Miles Austin, Austin Collie and Hines Ward or Malcolm Floyd left or something like that, then DEFINITELY!

Unknown said...

@J

Your Question:
I can start 2 LBs and have 1 D flex spot which I usually use to start another LB. I currently carry 4 LBs for these three spots. Ray Lewis, Karlos Dansby, Jon Beason and Timmons.

However, Curtis Lofton and David Harris are now available on waivers.

The scoring is 1 point for tackles, 1/2 for an assist. 1 point per pass defenced. 3 for sacks and INTs.

Should I drop any of my players for the above mentioned guys? Who is most expendable? Thanks!

Answer:
Although I have not been pysched with Lewis or Beason's play so far this year, Lofton & Harris have not been any better so I'd just stay put as none those guys are know for sacks or INTs. Dansby & Timmons are powerful enough to carry your team and Lewis & Beason always have the potential to go off. If I were to make a move, I would prefer to have Harris & Lofton over Ray Lewis for the rest of the year. (Harris first, then Lofton)

Monk, I'd like to add to my question about Daryl Smith and Kirk Morrison. D. Levy is also Avail and I have thought about picking him up and maybe dropping E.J.Henderson.

I like E.J. He's always solid, but he doesn't usually get over 10 points in my league.

Answer:
We can't say with any confidence that D. Levy will be better than any of the guys listed above. At this point, it's just hype and situation that we're giving him credit for. I'd continue to go Daryl Smith and try to keep EJ on my bench for now because at least you know you can get solid points out of both.
