IDP Week 17 NFL Fantasy Football 2009 Championship

Congratulations to all and thank you for a great year!  Those of us who have played for awhile know how much skill it takes to get into the playoffs each year. Because, although there is a lot of bad luck like losing a Ronnie Brown for the season or a Bryan Scott, that's when you need to keep a sharp eye out for a guy on the rise like Jamal Charles or a Mike Brown to pick up the slack.

I'm around for those of you still playing in Week 17, but quite honestly, I have a major deadline at work so I don't have time to put together a column.  So please just post a comment and I'll answer you on an individual basis.  Also, if I find a lot of you are playing Playoff Fantasy Football, I'll start columns back up for you and I may just post a few names for fun who are emerging and who we should look out for next year and who we should forget about. For instance, what happens with Hawthorne when Tatupu comes back. I think we know Hillenmeyer, who put up a MONSTER game on MNF last night, goes back to the bench when Urlacher comes back. And don't forget about the Eagles Stewart Bradley. Lots of fun topics to follow in the off season and I will put together a "pre-season" list next year to prepare for your draft.

Thank again and feel free to post your champion success stories in the comments section. If I get a lot, I'll make a separate blog next week and post all of your victory stories.

My league plays 2 DP's, tackles worth one point so we mostly play LB's (more pts for interceptions and sacks but hard to predict).
I have been playing DJ Williams and David Hawthorne (Hawthorne thanks to you), but this is our Super Bowl week and I want to make sure about them.
I am looking at Geno Hayes or Jason Taylor (and some others), but I hate to change horses hear at the end.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks for your help this year.

Monk - thanks for all the help this year. I have am in a big play league - 10 points per sack and int, 1 point per tackle. Who are some names to look at for Week 17?

Monk,

Thanks for all the info this year.

I am a Wk. 17 championship-er.

Here's my IDP scoring rules:

Defensive Players League Value
Tackle Solo 1
Tackle Assist .5
Sack 3
Interception 6
Fumble Force 1
Fumble Recovery 1
Defensive Touchdown 6
Safety 1
Pass Defended 1
Block Kick 1

My IDP lineup currently is as follows for week 17 and IDP scoring is in the thread's first post:

D Flex: Paul Posluszny vs. Ind
DL: Trent Cole @ Dal
DL: Ray Edwards vs. NYG
DB: Bernard Pollard vs NE
DB: R. Harper @ Car
LB: L. Fletcher @ SD
LB: K. Morrison vs. Bal

Available on the wire are:

DL: Stylez White vs. Atl; Kiwanuka @ Min.; Kelsay vs. Ind; Kyle Williams vs. Ind.; J. Babineaux @ TB; Tamba Hali @ Den (DL eligible). Shaun Ellis vs. Cin; Randy Starks vs. Pit; Kroy Biermann @ TB. Ratliff vs. Phi.

DB: Coleman @ TB; Revis vs. Cin; Courtland Finnegan @ Sea; George Wilson vs. Ind; Q. Mikell @ Dal; Gibril Wilson vs. Pit.

LB: S. Tulloch @ Sea; K. Brooking vs. Phi; Dhani Jones @ NYJ; LaMarr Woodley and J. Farrior @ Mia.; Justin Durant @ Cle

I project to 139.05; opponent to 114.02 but his lineup could change plus I just don't put much stock in projections. I try to eliminate every weakness I can no matter what.

Please give me your thoughts! Thanks again!

Monk,

Once again, thanks for all your help this year. Your excellent IDP picks more than offset some questionable qb play and unluckiness at TE - I'm in the championship!

And, with that, here's where I could use some advice (tackle assist - 1pt, solo tackle - 2pts, pass deflection - 3pts, sack - 5pts):

* for defensive lineman, pick two out of Julius Peppers, Trent Cole, and Kiwanuka
* I have Winfield at my DB spot but he still looks hurt, giving up some big plays on Monday night - should I grab Mike Brown off the waiver wire?
* Posluszny has been putting Harrison (Pitt) to shame these past few weeks at my solo LB slot - is he safe to roll with against the Indy scrubs?

ANSWER
I would not go Hayes or Taylor over Hawthorne or Williams this week. Hawthorne will finish strong vs. Tennessee and Williams got 8 solos last time he faced KC, which is pretty solid. Hayes & Taylor are both WAY too risky to depend on for your championship. Your horses will get it done.

@Chris

I need you to provide me with the guys on your team and guys available that you're interested in. I can look up specific guys, but the best I can do for you at this time is point you towards any team facing NYJ or Buffalo.

Answer: I would go Hali over Edwards this week. Last time Hali faced Denver, he got 9 solos 1 asst & 3 sacks & 2 forced fumbles. Even if he does half of that or a quarter of that, he's worth it. The Giants will be MAD and I don't see Ray Edwards having a better game than Hali. Hali has Denver's number. He's worth the small risk for this matchup.

DB: Coleman @ TB; Revis vs. Cin; Courtland Finnegan @ Sea; George Wilson vs. Ind; Q. Mikell @ Dal; Gibril Wilson vs. Pit.

Answer
I'm tempted by Finnegan or Revis over Harper. Your INT scoring in your league is insane! And Finnegan vs. Seattle or Revis vs. anybody is always good. Coleman vs. TB is a bit weak. He only had 3 tackles last time they faced. But if Roman Harper was down in this group, he'd be my #1 candidate to put next to Pollard. Last time he faced CAR, he finished with a season high, 10 solos. So I'd stay put with Harper vs. Carolina.

LB: S. Tulloch @ Sea; K. Brooking vs. Phi; Dhani Jones @ NYJ; LaMarr Woodley and J. Farrior @ Mia.; Justin Durant @ Cle

Answer
Woodley is so freakin tempting over Morrison vs. Miami. He's been on fire and he's a sack master. But Morrison has been solid and Baltimore is a nice matchup. I think you stay Fletcher & Morrison. Lucky for you SD has been running the ball a lot more the last couple weeks. They were a wasteland for LBs the first 3 quarters of the season. But Fletcher should be fine.

Very nice team! To sum up, the only change I would make is Hali for Edwards this week. Good luck!

Answer - Cole & Kiwanuka (cole is obvious, but reason for kiwa is he's extremely consistent with higher tackle #s. He won't hurt you like peppers would if he doesn't get a sack. Last time peppers faced Brees, he got 1 tackle and that's it.

* I have Winfield at my DB spot but he still looks hurt, giving up some big plays on Monday night - should I grab Mike Brown off the waiver wire?

answer YES, last time Brown faced Denver, he got 9 solos, an INT & a pass deflection

* Posluszny has been putting Harrison (Pitt) to shame these past few weeks at my solo LB slot - is he safe to roll with against the Indy scrubs?

Yes, I really like Pos vs. Indy. He's had an nose for INTs this year and he could have some fun against their second string.

Monk -

Excellent information! Thanks so much once again! (And this was a different Chris than the one you emailed).

Take care!

Hey Monk,
Just found this site in time for my week 17 Championship game.
Need DL advice please.
Scoring:Solo=2;Asst=1;Sack=3;Int=3;FF=2;FumRec=2;TD=10.
Current DL: Dockett
Available FAs:Sed.Ellis, Sh Ellis, M. Douglas, R. Starks, Patterson, Gregg and lots more.

Who would you start out of these and do you have anyone you like better who might be a sleeper still available on FA?

Thanks for your help and Happy New Year!

Monk -

1 point per tackle or assist, 2 for interceptions and sacks.

I had a huge defensive letdown last week with the following players. Tanard Jackson, Hawthorne, Ruud, Curtis Lofton. Should I expect them to pick it back up this week? Or are there other players I should be targeting? What do you think of Hunter Hillenmayer? Craig Dahl? Dhani Jones? Demmorio Williams, Justin Durant? All waivers

Xay said...

Hey Monk, like every one else, thanks again for being an IDP master and providing all of your insight :)

Need some help on Linebackers:

I've got Cushing, DJ Williams, and just picked up Hunter Hillenmeyer.

I know that both Cushing and DJ are guys that you just never sit, but I'm seriously tempted to sit one of the two for Hunter vs Detroit this weekend.

Am I crazy talking? Just looking at what Hunter has done over the past few weeks (not a game under 8 pts. since week 12), alongside being a divisional-statement-end of the season game, I just have this gut feeling on him.

Sounds like I'm pretty sold on starting him, so the question is do I sit DJ or Cushing? I think DJ has a better match up vs KC, meaning I sit Brian Cushing.. that just doesn't sound right lol.

What would you do?

I guess while I'm here, I'll throw in a non IDP question too; SJax vs SF, Ced.Ben @ New York, and Jason Snelling @ TB.

Pick two.

thanks again!

Monk - thanks for all your help this year. My scoring system is 10 points per sack/int and 1 point per tackle. I need to pick two guys from the following groups of 3:

DE: Andre Carter, Trevor Scott, David Bowen
LB: Tamba Hali, Anthony Spencer, Paul Posluzsky
DB: A. Winfield, Dawkins, Delmas,CHINEDUM NDUKWE (cut and pasted that!)

Thanks for your help, happy new years!

1 point for tackles and assisted tackles. 2 for Sacks and INTs.

CB - Should I pick up Craig Dahl, Brent Grimes, Jonathan Joseph or Madeaui Williams?

Will B. Ruud rebound? Will Hawthorne?

If you had to take a DT this week would it be Dwan Edwards or Brandon Mebane?

Thank you!

Hello Monk,

Thanks for all the support this year! I can't wait for next years crop of IDP's. Thanks for the Tulloch and Ryans call last week.

I am a B. Scott owner and am in need of some help.

AT LB I have Hawthorne and Dj WIlliams but need 2 more to start from these:

A. Jordan
K. Brooking
C. Pace
J. Johnson
S. Tulloch
D. Ryans

Thanks for all the advice Monk.

Unknown said...

I like the Democo Ryans matchup vs. NE.

I am a little worried about Tulloch vs. Seattle

I like Akeem Jordan vs. Dallas. He proved he's back to his old ways last week.

So I'd go Ryans & A. Jordan for week 17

@J

Question
CB - Should I pick up Craig Dahl, Brent Grimes, Jonathan Joseph or Madeaui Williams?

Answer
I like Jonathan Joseph's matchup best vs. NYJ

QUESTION
Will B. Ruud rebound? Will Hawthorne?

ANSWeR
Ruud, I don't know vs. Atlanta. He should. I do think Hawthorne will finish well.

QUESTION
If you had to take a DT this week would it be Dwan Edwards or Brandon Mebane?

Answer
Dwan

@merc

QUESTION
Current DL: Dockett
Available FAs:Sed.Ellis, Sh Ellis, M. Douglas, R. Starks, Patterson, Gregg and lots more.

ANSWR
As far as "lots more". I really like T. Hali's matchup this week better than all the guys above.

Yes, I would go Hillenmayer over TJ and I would go D. Williams over Lofton. You gotta do what you gotta do even though those guys are bigger names.

Queston
DE: Andre Carter, Trevor Scott, David Bowen
LB: Tamba Hali, Anthony Spencer, Paul Posluzsky
DB: A. Winfield, Dawkins, Delmas,CHINEDUM NDUKWE (cut and pasted that!)

Answer
Bowens & Carter (if healthy), but Scott should be OK if Carter is not 100%

LB Poz & I'm digging that Hali matchup. He kicked so much butt last time he faced Denver that he's simply too hard to resist

Lastly, Delmas and Dawkins (winfield looked injured in his last game & I like Ndukwe, but I just like the Delmas matchup a bit better.
