IDP Week 9 NFL Fantasy Football 2010 Waiver Wire Pick Ups

Talk about bad luck!  My first 3 top recommendations on the list below have a bye in week 9 so you can't use them right away, but they'll be important adds to your team for week 10 so look at your roster and start planning ahead. I would want any of these 3 guys below more than Paris Lenon and Jon Beason.

* Important to note: Arizona changed their defense to a format that will give LB Paris Lenon a lot less tackles and will give their safety Kerry Rhodes a lot more tackles. You need to drop Paris Lenon for guys like Gerald McGrath, Justin Durant or even Mario Haggan

Immediate Waiver Wire Pick Ups (all in order by priority)

LBs:

(on bye) LB Gerald McGrath TEN might not be on your waiver wire, but he is available in my league and I need to go get him.  I was deciding whether to keep Paris Lenon this week or jump to Durant or get McGrath this week. I ended up staying with Arizona's LB P. Lenon to see how things panned out with Arizona's new defense. Boy do I regret that decision considering how much I like Durant & McGrath and how well both of them did this week.  McGrath had 10 solos this week vs San Diego, by the way.

(on bye) LB Justin Durant JAQs has shown us everything we need to see to add him to our rosters. Unfortunately, he is on bye week 9, but he's a smart add for week 10. He finished with 9 solos & 3 assists and is playing like a man posessed and appears to undertand that it's a priviledge and honer to be in the NFL. Good for him. I really believe his enthusiasm over the last couple weeks helped inspire that ass kicking of the Cowboys this week. He seemed to be the only player who cared during their "depression" weeks.
I wouldn't hesitate to drop Jon Beason for Justin Durant.

(on bye) LB Mario Haggan DEN stepped up again with 8 solos in week 8. He has his bye week 9, but he is one you'll want to add to your roster for week 10 with the Broncos new formation they've been using for the last 2 weeks on defense.

LB/DE Tamba Hali KC is such a consistent sack expert that I highly recommend taking a flyer on him vs. Oakland week 9. Especially if you're in a "big play" IDP league.

LB Scott Fujita CLE vs. NE week 9 is a nice matchup. Remember that he finished with finished with 10 solos, a sack and an INT against New Orleans week 7, but he has been a bit inconsistent this year so he's a little risky, but I feel he's the next best IDP option on the Cleveland D next to TJ Ward.

DBs

S K. Rhodes ARI is now "the man" on the Arizona D.  They changed up their formation to a Tampa 2, which mean all traffic will filter to Rhodes. He will now start racking up even more tackles then he did before. Just look at his 9 solos and 1 assist this week for the proof.

CB Bryant McFadden PIT has been good for a bunch of weeks in a row now, including lots of big plays and real solid tackling.  I highly recommend him vs. the Bengals week 9 on MNF.

(on bye) Jacksonville's SS Courtney Greene finished with his second strong week with 8 solos.

SS Eric Weddle SD finished with over 10 solos for the second time in 3 weeks.  I'd be nuts if I didn't recommend him vs. Houston week 9.  He is truly a boom bust guy though so beware. You can just as easily get the "3 solo tackle" version of Weddle as you could the "10 solo tackle" version, but if you're looking for a guy who has the potential to put up the same numbers as Redskins Landry while he's on bye, Weddle is your best shot at that off the waiver wire

CB Morgan Trent CIN finished with 9 solos, 2 assists and 1 INT week 8. He's never come anywhere close to this in the past, but because of the injuries in the Bengals DBs, he's been asked to increase his role and that is certainly what he did. This could be a mirage, but considering Cincy plays the Steelers next week on MNF and Ben throws the ball like crazy, I like this matchup.  Keep an eye on this closer to next week though and make sure Morgan Trent is still filling in for the injured CBs. But this could be a sneaky last minute "big point" fill-in if you need it for week 9. I'm using him if CB Greg Toler is still injured next week.

DEs

DE/LB Tamba Hali KC - Some people brought it to my attention that Hali is a DE in some of your leagues.  He's such an IDP stud, I'm recommending him as an LB also. But if he's a DE in your league and you can get him, he's the best DE in the entire league. Even better than Osi.

DT Colin Cole SEA is a tackle machine with the Hawks and damn consistent with sacks. Here's an important stat to know. The Hawks defensive line leads the league in the most tackles of any defensive line in the league. And it leads it's own team in "positional" tackles. The Hawks d-line has more tackles than any other position on thier team. So take your chances with Colin Cole. He's as good as a bet as there is out there.

DE Stylez White TB has been getting better and better each week with 4 solos, a sack and a forced fumble week 8. I'd make him a starter on your team vs. Atlanta.

DT/Nose Tackle Kyle Williams BUF has been a good/consistent tackler this year, but week 8 was his breakout week with 8 total tackles and 2 sacks.

Mirages:

S. Eric Berry KC finished with 10 total tackles and an INT. By far his best game of the year.  So much better than any of his other games that I have to say this is a mirage and I wouldn't trust this.

DE K. Vanden Bosch DET  finished with 5-1 and 2 sacks while fellow teamate DE C. Avril DET finished with 4-1     and 2 sacks.  This tells you that this was a situational game because neither one of these guys have done this for a long time. Oh, by the way, Detroits Suh also had two sacks and a TD in this one. But Suh better not be on anyone's waiver wires for DT or DE required leagues. If he's on yours then he's the NUMBER 1 DE or DT on this weeks list. (unless Tamba Hali is a DE in your league)

SS Kareem Moore WAS with 7 solos and an assist is just a mirage this week.

FS Sherrod Martin CAR racked up a ton of tackles and a sack vs. Bradford, but this was just mirage and couldn't even be predicted.

Observations:

Bishop is Rollin!!!

Tampa Bay's Ruud, Black & Hayes continue to all put up the exact same numbers every week. It's incredible how consistent they all are you can almost guarantee that each one will put up 5-6 tackles and guess that 1 of the 3 will have at least a sack or INT each week. Guessing which one is impossible. Ruud obviously has the biggest name, but Black & Hayes are solid fill ins anytime you're in a jame.

LB D. Levy DET came back for his first game vs. the Redskins with a whopping 4 tackles.  Leave him on your wire until he gives us a reason to go get him.

LB Keith Rivers CIN was my only bad call of the week. He finished with 4 total taclkes and a pass defensed. Far from what he has done over the last 2 weeks.  This was his problem in the past. Just when he looks solid, he lets you down.

I've seen LB Cameron Wake MIA on a lot of peoples lists when they ask me questions and I have to say that I continue to "not get it". He's a had a sack here or there, but I've never seen anything that made me want him on my roster.

@ garrett

That's fantastic that you can get Brees for an LB. I'd let him pick anyone he wants from that group of LBs you have. That way you don't have to decide.

Hi Monk,

McRath, Durrant, Haggan are all available on the waiver-wire.

Should I substitute any one these for Cushing, Laurinaitis, Posloushny or D.Johnson in my dynasty league?

Is Colin Cole, Stylez White or Kyle Williams better fantasy options at DL than J.Allen, B.J. Raji or Kampmann?

Your question

Should I substitute any one these for Cushing, Laurinaitis, Posloushny or D.Johnson in my dynasty league with McRath, Durrant or Haggan.

Answer: I would consider McGrath over D. Johnson in a Dynasty league, but since McGRath is on bye next week, I would just wait and see how both guys play in week 10. If D. Johnson looks like he's declining (which I'm seeing more and more each week) and McGrath has another stellar game, then make the move then.

Question:
Is Colin Cole, Stylez White or Kyle Williams better fantasy options at DL than J.Allen, B.J. Raji or Kampmann?

Answer:
I'd play both Cole or Stylez White over Allen this year. Raji is on about the same level as these guys and Kampmann a matchup play at best this year. So I would drop Allen for Colin Cole, yes. I would keep Raji. And I would drop Kampmann for Stylez White right now, yes. As long as you don't have to bid or pay money for these moves, I would make them to improve your team.

just an observation or suggestion.. perhaps to all... SDC DB Steven Gregory comes back from his suspension.. might be available in the waiver wire and could be a forgotten man.. might be a good add going forward.

Ngata is currently available in my league and we start 2 DL guys each week. I already have Justin Tuck that I'm using the rest of the way. Should I drop Chris Clemons for Ngata? My other options are Idonije, S. White, D. Edwards, and Kyle Williams who are all free agents available for pick up. Just looking to see who would be the best option to roll with from here on out. Thanks!

Thanks Monk

I think I will attempt to trade Johnson and Jared Allen they still have some value. Who would you consider top 3 at DL,DB & LB for the rest of the season?

Hey Monk,

So Ndukwe didnt play which really sucked but wat can u. I may win though anyways.

so Q for this week. Now allen has been a huge huge huge bust. would u say its safe to drop him? and for who?

Stylez G, Chris Long, Calais Campbell?

In a league that starts to Corners, who do you like more Toler, Winfield, Thomas (giants) going forward? What happened to Toler this week? No stats!

Sarah said...

Hi Monk!

What happened to Chris Kelsay this week? Do you expect a bounce-back against Chicago in Week 9, or should I be searching the waiver wire for a replacement DE? Stylez and K. Coleman are available.

Monk,

I think that many people are adding Cameron Wake because of his time in the CFL and how dominant he was up here. He had one good week and everyone jumped on his bandwagon.

Hi Monk
Should I replace Bradie james for zac diles. I picked Lance briggs for lenon. whats your opinion on this. Mine is tackle heavy league. do you know what happened to G.Toler. He completely disappeared from stat sheet this week. Thanks for your D. Bishop advice. working greatly for me.

@ Eli,

I really like Stylez White from that list. You just always have to be prepared to add/drop a DL on a weekly basis based on matchups.

@ Cornered

I"ll always be a Winfield fan. Toler injured his back late in the week in practice.

@ Sarah

Great question on Chris Kelsay I have found nothing to explain what happened. I would definitely go Stylez White

I just picked up richard seymour. he has been putting up solid numbers lately.

check him out for week 9 against KC

Hey Monk sorry to bother u again bout this just really need this win.

Sylez G, Chris Long, Calais Campbell

Can u explain why i shud get who ever u choose?

Calais seems to me to be the most consistent in my league he has recorded atleast 10pts a game usually around 13-14

Chris long has recorded around 17 the last 3 games or so

and stylez G has recorded 20 this week 12 last week and poor numbers the week before then (3-4 pts)

so who do u suggest?

Is calais matchup against MIN not a good one?

btw diles did amazing yesterday! 10 solos!

Hey Monk I wanted to give a recommendation for DT

Wat are ur thoughts on Marcus Thomas. He has a bye this week but week 10 he has MIA and i think that is a great matchup for him.. he has been very consistent and efficient the last couple of weeks.

Let me know!

Hi Michael,

Hope all is well.. always value your opinion.

My LBs are

DeAndre Levy (Can't keep him beyond this year)
Paris Lenon (Can keep him next year)
Geno Hayes (Can't keep him next year)
Quincy Black (Can keep him next year)
Gerald McRath (Can keep him next year)

I am thinking of adding LB Indy Pat ANgerer and thinking of dropping either Levy or Black.
WHo would you drop if any for Angerer. Is Angerer worth the add in your opinion.

Thanks,
CJ

tj ward, whitner, diles, rudd, session, durant.

Answer:

Those guys are tough, but I have to go Session first for consistency, then Diles for upside, then TJ Ward, Whitner, Durant & Rudd. (Durant is not higher because he's only been doing this for a couple weeks now and I'd feel better if I saw it for 2 more weeks. Same with Diles. As Cushing gets more mentally comfortable with being the quarterback of that defense, his natural ability will take over more and is tackles will increase)

@ Eli

You shouldn't depend on me at all for DL decisions. In fact, you should depend on any forecaster out there for that decision. I know all the pro IDP guys and see their rankings for DLs every week. Nobody can predict this stuff.

Every guy on your list of Sylez G, Chris Long, Calais Campbell are good athletes. But I can also tell you that Nate Kaeding, David Akers & Jeff Reed are all excellent kickers with great matchups. Can you tell me which one will have the best game in week 9? My smart money is on Akers, but that's just a guess based on past matchups and the way he's playing this year.

I played football in college and went to all of my Dad's games that he coached while growing up. What I can tell you is guys play harder when there is more on the line and it's a division rivalry.

Tampa Bay's White is going against division rivalry Atlanta for a HUMUNGOUS game that could put Tampa Bay in a position that they haven't been in for many years. White has been playing with perfect technique against linemen and has multiple QB hurries. Eventually those will turn to sacks. White played very well against the Falcons in the past and Matt Ryan is not overly mobile, does take sacks and gets quite a few balls deflected at the line by D-linemen. That all equals IDP numbers and opportunities for White.

So he's the one I'm currently "feeling" this week. If you're "feeling" another guy, you should go with that because in the end it's all one big guessing game with DLs & Kickers.

Answer:
I love the upside of Angerer and I'm feeling Levy is bit of a bust. He still may have a decent game this year, but Detroit LBs are bad in general. I like Angerer over Levy. That's a smart play to me and you could be catching a beast on his way up.

@ simonsays2

Question:

Monk - Last night's game aside. Should I stick Cushing over Diles going forward ? Much appreciated.

Answer:
Based on the result, it clearly looks like Diles moving forward. I think Cushing will get better after he feels more comfortable with all the decisions he's currently making at MLB, but that might take a couple games for him to stop thinking so much and react. I think you do go Diles over Cushing.

Hello MM,

Great stuff as usual. Best kept secret on the web, this site!

I have Willis on Bye this week. Who should I pick up? Also are D. Whitner and Dwan Edwards still viable plays?

On my wire:

Beason
Dansby
Cushing
EJ Henderson
Ruud
Bradie James

Monk,

I'd like your thoughts on my current IDP situation. The format is 5 D's and 3 DB's. I'm currently rolling with:

D - Desmond Bishop
D - Paul Posluszny
D - Bradie James
D - Clint Session
D - T.J. Ward
DB - Antoine Winfield
DB - Donte Whitner
DB - Bernard Pollard

I've currently got two open roster slots, and I was planning on filling them with two more IDPs. however, with Bishop being my only bye remaining, I'm thinking I may just pick up one defensive guy. I'm pretty happy with my current crew, with the possible exceptions of Winfield and Pollard. Pollard hasn't put up the big numbers he got last year, but he's consistent enough (6-10 ppw) that I'd keep him over Winfield, who seems to dip to 2-3 points every couple of weeks. Would it be worth my while to bench Winfield, move Ward to his spot, and pick up one of McRath, Durrant, or Haggan to fill the fifth D spot?

Also, what of Aqib Talib? he had a big week 8, and he is covering Roddy White in week 9, but you didn't mention him at all. Worth picking up, or a one-week wonder?

Thanks for all your help!

Nick

Answer: Whitner more so but both are viable, yes.

Filling in for Willis, I'd go Ruud in week 9. A division game for all the marbles vs. Michael Turner. This will be one of Ruud's bigger weeks and if worse comes to worse, you know he's automatic for at least 6 tackles. My guess is 7 and a forced fumble or pass deflection.

I don't think this is the week to drop Winfield covering either Fitzgerald or Breaston with Derek (I throw INTs) Anderson at QB. I'm feeling a pick 6 for Winfield this week. He has one once a year and why not this game. So hold onto him one more week and then definitely do the move of TJ in his slot, drop Winfield and get McGrath or Durant. I view them as dead even so it's whoever you want.

Who do you like more this week, Bishop vs. Dallas or Ruud vs. Atlanta? Also, would you start Chung (assuming he is playing) over either of these 2 LB's? I keep reading reports that Bishop's numbers could drop off since he's not playing every down. Just curious about what you think. Thanks!

Hi Monk,

I got Mayo, Cushing, Beason, and Clint Session. Have to start 2, Mayo for sure, who would be the other? Zac Diles is available, should I grab him? It's a dynasty league so don't really want to drop Cushing or Beason so I would have to drop Session. Thx.

Great stuff Monk Man !!
Session has a dislocated elbow and fractured forearm , should I replace him with Brackett, Wake, Rivers, Angerer or Wimbley?
He played thru the injury on Monday nite , im just worried about how effective he will be.
Is Angerer a starter with Brackett back?

Monk - What are the chances of Session not playing htis week - will Gary Brackett bump up his production? I'll need a replacement for him if he sits, and Brackett is available...

Whitner
TJ Ward
Tillman
Chung

@Ryan

Out of your options, I have to say that I really, really love Ruud's matchup vs. Atlanta and not only will he face Turner, but he'll be really fired up for this game as it's potentially the biggest and most important of the year for Tampa Bay.

Your Question:

I got Mayo, Cushing, Beason, and Clint Session. Have to start 2, Mayo for sure, who would be the other? Zac Diles is available, should I grab him? It's a dynasty league so don't really want to drop Cushing or Beason so I would have to drop Session. Thx.

Answer:
Session might be put on IR with his fractured arm and dislocated elbow so he's out first. I would play Diles over Cushing. But I like Cushing better than Beason so this would be one of the rare cases where I would feel good about starting both Cushing and Diles at the same time. I think we've seen enough from Beason to know who he is this year. He's living off of his draft pick status only at this point so I would go Diles and Cushing for the win.

Your Question:
Session has a dislocated elbow and fractured forearm , should I replace him with Brackett, Wake, Rivers, Angerer or Wimbley?
He played thru the injury on Monday nite , im just worried about how effective he will be.
Is Angerer a starter with Brackett back?

Answer:
I am also very worried about Session and out of your choices, I think you have to go Brackett. He's the only reliable option in that bunch. Angerer has huge potential, but that's quite a risk to take and Rivers could go off or he could suck. Wimbley and Wake are completely reliant on sacks to get you your points and that a risky roll of the dice so Brackett is your best option.

@marmstrong

Question:

Monk - What are the chances of Session not playing htis week - will Gary Brackett bump up his production? I'll need a replacement for him if he sits, and Brackett is available...

Chung

Answer:
I'm in the exact same boat as you this week. Brackett is a nice grab, yes. I was lucky enough to get Lance.Briggs for that spot. And I grabbed McFadden vs. Pit this week, but Richard Marshall was not available in my league. I like that. I just don't trust Chung enough and I'm not messing around with it.
